Is a BUX348 a suitable replacement for a 2N3055 in the single transistor flyback driver?

Since when did an IRFP460 cost £15? You should be able to get them for £3-5 each.

Ouch! Nearly 3x the cost as in the USA
Link2

Shipping may make that negligible....or not(?)

I 'clicked' on that link and the following message appeared

"Delivery Restrictions: The manufacturer does not currently allow us to sell this product in your region."

I think delivery is free from RS, but I'm not sure. I could probably shop around, maybe try eBay, but I'm not ready to order yet anyway. I'm still researching and learning about this subject.

I've now learned that MOSFETs switch off faster tham BJTs or IGBTs, so for this reason are best for flyback circuits. Also that they are easier to parallel, but that ideally you need ZVS to make them efficient.

I've also realised that if I use four of the ~900 watt MOSFETs mentioned above (paralleled) in a Mazilli ZVS circuit fed by rectified mains, I'll need some HUGE smoothing caps. (3 kW power supply). I haven't attempted to work out how big yet.

Anyway, at least I'm making some progress. I've started looking at H bridges too, and push-pull rather than flyback, but I'll still have the same smoothing problems.

They are £5-6 from Farnell. Cheaper on Ebay, but you have to watch out for fakes.

The BUP314 is a fun device, a 1200V IGBT that you used to be able to buy from Maplin for a fiver. I think they sold it for tinkerers building their own electronic ignition systems, or something.

£18 from RS, not listed by Maplin or Farnell.

I realize this is off topic but the idea that shipping is restricted to the UK (our ally for over a century) & a major element of NATO is, frankly, really embarrassing & inappropriate.

It happens a lot on eBay as well.
