Hey! I thought I was doing that for you. I'm just working on the circuit that makes it self-destruct if you never get around to doing the hike. smile

Martin, I was mountain biking in BC last summer, and the lodge I stayed in actually had a copy of "Bear Attacks". It was quite interesting. I only ever saw black bears, and I got the impression they were more scared of me than I was of them.

I remember reading Bill Bryson's "A Walk In The Woods" and was disappointed that he did the trail in about 50 small sections.

Aye Steve, that's just a list of what needs doin', not necessarily who's doin' it wink

After a prolonged discussion regarding the radio and power options with Chris Russell last night, I'm reevaluating a few things. It seems likely the 817 will be going with me a vast majority of the way. If I can't handle that on a few legs, I'll probably construct a small dual-band pixie or and a little regen receiver or somesuch. Even the ATS-4 is looking a little limited for what I really want, even though the designer has made me a very generous offer. The money can just be better applied elsewhere.

As for books, for anybody who likes hiking that AWOL On The Appalachian Trail is available for the kindle. I had to jailbreak my copy to ditch the DRM (hint) and get it to work on my Sony reader, but it was well worth the money and effort. It is one of the more informative and well balanced hiking/traveling books I've read in a long time. The guy published the book himself to start before Amazon picked him up, and he's quite talented.

'Bear Attacks' is a great read, in that it is very informative. Not such a great read in that it makes you question ever stepping foot in the woods again. The conclusion I got from it was "Bears like eating people. You can do this, or not do it. Maybe they'll attack, maybe not. Don't want to get eaten? Stay home."

I've had several altercations with bears in the woods, all ending the way they should, with both of us running in opposite directions at Maximum Warp.

smile that was EXACTLY the impression I got from it as well ! E.G. Shouting at them may scare them off but on the other hand It might just make them angry. I spent a week canoeing in the Algonquin national park and luckily didn't encounter any bears however we did have to wait for sometime for a large Elk to finish eating it's dinner before canoeing past, apparently they can get quite nasty. Here's an idea for a project, I don't know how many bears have radio collars (I think quite a few do) so build an early warning receiver that let's you know if a collared bear is anywhere near you smile The same idea has been used with Wolves in some areas. Rather than shooting them they are fitted with radio collars which help farmers/ranches keep track of where they are so they can be scared off before they become a problem.

Martin.
