Hey guys, can i use a homemade HV transformer build around old fly-back core and powered from rectified mains at about 100 KHZ to power small SGTC ...

Take a look at my thread, I just built my firsy tesla coil.

I used a flyback also.

Dear Shady

You must have done some homework or have some experience to come here asking a question like that, but you did too little...

There is plenty of sites and forum posts about that subjects that it would take me 10 seconds to find something relevant on google and give you that link.

But it is important that you learn to do your own research and only ask for help when it is because you do not understand the subject rather than when you are not willing to invest your own time in studying all the work available.

i have already searched about it and found that it`s possible to make it with dc fly-back but with ac and at such high freq.(100khz) it wont charge the capacitors correctly is that right ..??!!and why..??

I highly suggest you learn and read more about High Voltage. As you might hurt yourself or worse, die.

I have been into HV for about a month and half now, and I made my first Tesla Coil erlier.

Try making a simple flyback driver before thinking about TC's.

why u r saying that .?! frown I have been into HV for about a 3 years till now and i have successfully build fly-back drivers starting from single transistor driver ,ZVS and with rectified mains and other various HV projects. ( PLASMA GLOBE,OZONE GENERATOR, ...ETC).
i have built a SGTC based on a ZVS driver @ 35V 10A but the results wasn't satisfying . as it wasn`t tuned correctly so my question was if i used a better driver @ higher power and with a custom made AC fly-back would it give better results after tuning of course ..??
i know that theoretically SGTC are mainly powered by AC HV sources but at low freq. about 50:60 HZ but my driver is tuned at about 100KHZ i think this could be the prob.

Well sorry to judge you.

A TC can be made with a DC flyback, as I did it yesterday. You can google flyback powered Tesla Coil.

And my thread can show you how I made mine from a puny 11watt flyback driver.

its alright walshy155 never mind it was just misunderstanding.any way i am working currently on the power supply unit and i will try to post progress info. up to data.but do u think the arc in the attachment has enough power to power my TC..?!or i need a more powerful driver

If you where to make a HV transformer, you would have to rectify it. It would take an incredibly tiny tank capacitor to charge on each cycle at a few kv and a few ma at 100KHz, the capacitance would almost have to be non-exsistant. DC would alow the cap to charge, because it would not have to be discharged and charged in reverse nanoseconds later.

I agree, you should maybe do some more homework, and we say that because we really think it is unsafe for you to be playing with Tesla coils if you don't know that a capacitor cannot charge with the AC waveform at 100KHz if it is any appreciable capacitance.

Making flyback drivers does not prove you are ready for Tesla coils. There are so many in-depth plans on the internet that you don't need to know absolutely anything about electronics to build the simple schematics. Im not saying that you know absolutely nothing about electronics, but based on the questions you ask, you do not know enough about the subject to be tinkering with it.

Tesla coils may be a simple schematic, but every single Tesla coil ever built will be different than every other Tesla coil, so you can't just follow a guide, like you can with a flyback driver. You have to do a *lot* of tuning, you must use quality parts if you want any real lifetime, and so many other things you must consider. That can be proved by looking at all the thousands of questions people have asked about Tesla coils, there are so many different dimensions!

If you are going to go into the trouble to wind your own flyback, you are probably better off using a NST.
The only time I'd ever use a HF transformer over a iron-cored one for personal use is if I needed very high voltages and powers or required portability (high frequency transformers weigh less).
