10 watts is your problem if you don't put much power in you can't get very impressive sparks! put more power in, if you want a nice tesla coil, get your self some neon sign transformers, or put a mot with a voltage quadrupler on it. but then you will need a mmc cap. witch are like $20 for a 15kv .02 uf witch should do the trick.
your very lucky you even get break out at all, my first tesla coil didn't even get break out on its own, put i could start an arc off of it from 15cm away!

So,even if a 10Watt SGTC is optimized, it can only produce 1mm spark? or if I can optimize it I can get a spark longer than 1~2mm?
If I can find caps with very high voltage rating(55kv),is MMC still better?
I can't afford a NST and can't find MOTs.
what about build a powerful zvs driver and power TC? that would be good.
