I build this SGTC according to the schematic found here Link2

But I only can get 1~2mm sparks.Why?

I tried to add or remove some primary turns. But this is even worsen. And primary capacitor (I use 10kv 500pF)get's hot. Why?

How can I fix it?

Thanks

well how much wattage are you putting in? people with the huge arcs put LOTS of power in!

What sort of capacitor are you using?

I'm not sure what kind of capacitor it is but it can be seen in my photo.

well tell me how much power your putting in? because that small cap has to be limiting quite abit of power you need caps like this Link2,r:14,s:30&tx=109&ty=81&biw=1152&bih=641

or this Link2

and ct92404 (a user on youtube with tesla tutorials) said "not to use pointed screws for the spark gap because it will fire prematurely"

Is less than 10W.

So which is better?a single high voltage cap or MMC?

what is ideal for a spark gap?Can I use something round or cylindrical?

10 watts is your problem if you don't put much power in you can't get very impressive sparks! put more power in, if you want a nice tesla coil, get your self some neon sign transformers, or put a mot with a voltage quadrupler on it. but then you will need a mmc cap. witch are like $20 for a 15kv .02 uf witch should do the trick.

your very lucky you even get break out at all, my first tesla coil didn't even get break out on its own, put i could start an arc off of it from 15cm away!

this was my first tc, video taken witch a cell phone witch sucks!

I like my multi color secondary cheesey

So,even if a 10Watt SGTC is optimized, it can only produce 1mm spark?
or if I can optimize it I can get a spark longer than 1~2mm?

If I can find caps with very high voltage rating(55kv),is MMC still better?

I can't afford a NST and can't find MOTs.

what is the line frequency in your country, i can't afford an nst either mad but i have to oil buring ignition coils i'll sell you for $50

that will equal 440watts and you will get a nice output with that!
