Hi all.
Add here your science and technology predictions for 2011.

1) A superconductor will be discovered which exhibits a Meissner effect at 281K (7.85 Celsius)
Probably based on a variant of the recent 3 Celsius (Tl4Pb)Ba2MgCu8O13+ based material.

2) Discovery of the Higgs boson at the LHC, sometime in August 2011

3) First commercially available chip based on memristor technology.

4) Discovery of a polymer compound which exhibits a stronger magnetic field than high grade NdFeB.

5) Commercial production of the first nanotube based lithium battery with capacity equivalent of 10 Ah for a 18650.

Commercialization of direct injection green laser diodes!
To be implemented in pico-projectors.

This is great. no more need to use a bulky and inefficient DPSS. sadly, just like the InGan 445s.. they are only efficient at high powers.

Maybe we will also see some exotic colors like 488nM and 590nM in diode form in the near future.
(and without that heart-attack price tag)

that is not normally a problem, even at 200mW that would be more than enough with the optics losses.

I am wondering if they can make RGB diodes like the BRIR Sony ones, supposedly the structures are broadly compatible.

5b) 20Ah for 18650 cells based on virus structures

first to be seen in mobile phones and upper class racing models.

"Dude, your phone has a virus".. LOL!

Is it just me or do a lot of recent inventions have a lot in common with natural structures, such as e-ink based on cuttlefish chromophores, newer battery designs based on viruses, etc.

It is amazing how the natural world can still teach us lessons. Evolution did a very clever job of optimising these natural structures.

My "prediction" is that the Copenhagen Suborbitals rocket will have a successfull launch in June.

*Some anti-laser legislation will be proposed.

*Superconductors that work at room temperature.

*GE starts selling the level 3 chargers.

*Gasoline >$4 a gallon, causes incentive to buy electric cars.

*Google TV becomes popular.

*>5 terabyte HDDs, SSDs still struggle to catch up.

*I finish my x-ray machine.

*Carbon nanotubes integrated into a rechargeable battery.

*The internet starts to get teired.

First Contact sometime in June 2011.
Probably from that multiple planet system they found a while back, Gliese 581C?

Oh, and expect the title for the "Star Trek" sequel to be
ST:Paradox ?

btw good luck for 2011 everyone, 8 hours to go...

The internet is looking pretty tired already. smile

Next year goes up to 11, so I can see myself building some more amps.

I wish those carbon-nanovirus batteries would hurry up, we have a product that runs off 18650s and could do with a boost in battery life. 18650s are at 3-point-something Ah just now.

Gasoline is already over $4 a gallon here, and I don't see many electric cars.
