I'm sorry, I just said grease monkeys because pumping gas sounded too cliche. I wrote that at 2 AM, please give me a break.

Agreed! At least that self taught knowledge stays with you more than info that is instructed.

self taught knowledge stays with you

And is extremely difficult to un-teach in case
you got it wrong in the first place.

I'm afraid I have to disagree,(EDIT: to an extent,) Radiotech.

A lot of people with a 20 year old 2nd class degree think they know everything.

Knowledge changes on an almost daily basis.

Anyone who thinks they know it all is ignorant.

(EDIT: my opinion is that self taught prople are more ready to accept that what they learned isn't the full story, and that there is still more to learn)

(This comment is a generalisation, and is not aimed at anyone in particular)

Well, my degree is now nearly 30 years old, but I took the (for me) unusual step of deciding about 5 years ago to re-do the same degree. Not going back to uni, you understand, but redoing the courses with current technology.

Been fascinating. What really interests me is that I now find it far easier to do - the maths really doesn't phase me and helping my sons with A Level maths is a breeze.

Still have problems with Smith charts, though frown

Regardless of some of the stupid comments in this thread, it is a very good topic.
Self taught education really is the way. Children are amazingly resourceful and intelligent without education.
Education seems to dumb them down. There is a school in Russia where the kids drive their own education,
no curriculum, and they don't have to be there if they don't want. It is amazingly successful.
Here is the view of a well respected man beautifully animated.

For what it's worth I'm entirely self taught. People who teach themselves seem to be excellent at what they do. In an ideal world, children from an early age would be able to choose what they ant to do.

Take an electronics enthusiast for example; they would learn the history of electronics in their history class; all the inventions and discoveries. They would be taught basic math, then learn the more advanced stuff as they need it. In English they would be taught ho to write reports about their discoveries and learn good note taking skills. The rest of the day they would be given the parts to do anything they want with, and teachers are there to answer any questions.

Similar methods would apply to the music enthusiast, or the chemistry enthusiast.

When it comes to elctronics I'm completely, 100% self taught. I was born with a DMM in my hand and ever since I was old enoug to wield one I have had a wrench In my hand too. I would always much rather take my toys apart to see what made the tick than play with them. Hell, I understand machines much better than people.

Fast frorward 20 years. I'm studiying EE. My teacher asks: "Can you measure MAINS with an oscilloscope?"
To wich I reply: "Yes, you can, differentially; On a dual channnel scope set the 'scope to ADD and INVERT and tie the ground clips together. Then measure with both probes et voila!"

For my troubles I got a 20 minute safety lecture on how elecrticity is going to come and bite me in the arse. WHAT THE FUCK? I've been dicking around with electricity since I was 4, I've played with higher tensions that are present in the national grid in my parents kitchen and for fucks sake I've even taken X-ray images in my cellar (albeit crappy ones, but still). And I'm still god effing damn alive.

The same 'teacher' spent the last lesson available talking about how magnetic fields can cause cancer. Because in the 1960's there was a kindergarden that was built upon a large transformer station. and 4% of the kids got leukemia. Correlation doesn't imply causation, you stupid effing hag. What the **** is this **** they are teaching us?

****! And **** every one that **** looks like **** **** them!
