Steve ward ran +-30v in the gates of the 40n60 with no problens.. i think in put a 1:2 gate driver and 26v zener in the igbts gates.. it is less than the manufacture specification of transient gate voltage but i think that will be safe..

If you put 30V on the gate with 26V zeners you will dissipate a lot of power in the zener. The purpose of protection zeners is to cut the spikes (ringings) so the zener voltage should be equal or higher than gate voltage.

According to one old textbook I read, the life slowly decreases for all gate voltages above 10V or so, because of field-driven migration of impurities. The gate voltage limit on the datasheet corresponds to a lifetime that the manufacturer thinks is acceptable and can guarantee on his process.
But hobbyist Tesla coils don't need millions of hours MTBF, so it's not really a problem, you can paste the gates as hard as you like. They don't physically break down until about 40-50V.
Finn Hammer and I have a science park Tesla coil exhibit that, as far as I know, has been driving its IGBT brick gates at about 24V for years. Well, to be honest, the gate voltage was adjustable and I can't remember what we left it set at.
When it comes to heatsink temperature, cooler is better for a DRSSTC. The junction temperature leaps up violently during each burst, and the cooler it starts out, the cooler it will top out. If you're really keen, you can use the plots of transient thermal impedance vs. pulse length on the datasheet to predict it, or you can just use the same OMG extreme cooling techniques as the PC overclocking crowd.

i belive to use a heatsink like a notebook size... with a lot of good fans.. it will run with a full bridge of n60n60 and the ocd setted to 600A or minus.. i afraid to kill my igbts.. i think that this setup will run ok.. i belive to use this in smalls shows..
