Original lab notes (handwritten) from Bell Labs are here:

EDIT: The entry made on 6th January 1948 mentions 'P' type, but I'm not sure if this directly answers your question.

These two may help you on your way...

Instruments of Amplification - Fun With Homemade Tubes, Transistors, And More.
&
The Voice Of The Crystal - How To Build Working Radio Receiver Components Entirely From Scratch.

Both by H. P. Friedrichs.

"Instruments" got me into making my own valves after visiting the Vintage Wireless and TV museum in Dulwich, UK.

If I recall correctly, he used copper oxide in one homemade transistor and a vintage 1N34 diode (the type you can unscrew) for another.

Good luck.

You could just use the crystal for cryatal radios.

It would act like a diode, and it might have traces of germanium.....

These people have a few smaller pieces of Germanium it seems, although getting it to the states might prove dificult.

I dont supose you need this much or wish to spend that kind of money on it but check this one anyway, I think its "semiconductor grade" like you asked for.

Make a point contact diode, use it in a crystal radio.
