I was in the TV repair business many years ago (probably before many 4hv members were born) and back then I heard about a guy who checked for the presence of high voltage by placing his index finger on the anode of the hv rectifier tube, and his thumb on the TV chassis. He has done that so many times that he lost all feeling of pain in his hand. I'm not sure if he was able to confirm if the hv was too low or too high, but I suspect that he used his procedure as a "go-no go" check. I know what burnt flesh smells like after getting zapped from a high voltage arc, so that guy must have smelled real bad!
