I've built a couple coils and I've always wondered how Litz wire would perform so I built one. I've noticed a few interesting properties with this coil. First it has a very narrow range of tuning about 1/4 turn on my primary. Outside of that it has almost zero output. Its also sounds completely different. but overall of the same size of form/length of windings it seems to have better output. Since I'm new to coiling let me know what you think and if you have any similar experiences with Litz wire or SGTC's in general.

Can you describe (or post a photo) of the adjustable "tap" for your litz wire primary?

Tighter tuning and better output suggest a coil with higher Q - which would make sense as litz wire has a lower AC impedance than solid wire.

@ Herr Zapp
according U4R1A's post only the secondary is litz-wire. The primary is copper tube.
I hope nobody is angry that I answered without beeing asked.
If so, I apologize.

I'm not angry.. I work crazy hours so i appreciate the help. But Nestor is right only the secondary is litz wire.

If you DO get a chance, a close clear pic of that secondary would be fantastic: you've me want to try it!

Thank you.
It's impressive for a few reasons. It's a clean attractive job. I do have some questions & I know is Holiday time; but when you get a chance I really would like to know more. I know it's quite a few questions but you have "gone outside the box" in a sense & it's quite interesting.
Would you have any rough estimation of the total length of wire used?
I see you've noted 23" as length & I take it that is the active coil length. What was the diameter of the secondary?
You also noted a narrow tuning range upon the primary (1/4 turn). When you made you initial assembly did you notice any racing sparks or corona or when the coil went out of tune - or did it simply not preform?
The camera's focus does not show whether the coil was coated thickly with any lacquer was any coating used to further insulation?

You got some strong sparks however you have a good power source in that 60ma 15Kv: did you experiment with your topload at all or simply go by formula?

12/36 Litz wire is ~25 awg solid core so @ 23" with a 4.5" form it is ~1300ft but when I bought the spool it weighted ~ 1.34lbs and I wound this and a 12" pancake coil which is setting in some mineral oil currently. When the coil was out of tune it didn't have any adverse effects(racing sparks) and wouldn't breakout from the topload but I could get ~2" spark with a chicken stick. It has ~7 coats of spray on polyurethane which the Litz soaked right up and became as hard as a rock. i haven't currently tried any other toploads mainly due to a lack of them but I do plan on trying out some different sizes once they are made. The one awesome thing other then how well it performs is that it required many less turns on the primary then Teslamap predicted. It said I'd need ~12-15 and Its @ 8.5.
