I grew up during those specific years of the "Duck & Cover" cartoons and Civil Defense rehearsals in schools in the USA. I have often wondered, when this occurred during the very late 1950's and 1960's - if this may have contributed to some of the social madness that carried over; -placing us in wars (that weren't wars; but a "police action") and a myriad of societal unrest, disappointment and a loss of faith in our government.
As a middle-aged man I look back and wonder how healthy it was to place a generation of children in a position where they literally grew up under the shadow of threatened death & annihilation.

I've wondered often whether profoundly corrupt characters like Sen. Joseph McCarthy, J. Edgar Hoover, and Richard M. Nixon - when he was one of the prosecutors at HUAC - can really have believed all the hysterical anti-Communist nonsense which drove the A-bomb escalation, and the risk of global death that flowed from it.

I wouldn't be surprised if they believed it, or at least believed that it was mostly true and that a few exaggerations were necessary to motivate the populace. I am reminded of Feynman's statement: "The first principle is that you must not fool yourself—and you are the easiest person to fool." I wouldn't be surprised if this applied to much more than science.

Burt the Turtle, oh , man thats the good stuff. As you see i am a coinsure of the war time propaganda.

and from Dr Strangelove:

General "Buck" Turgidson: General Ripper called Strategic Air Command headquarters shortly after he issued the go code. I have a portion of the transcript of that conversation if you'd like me to to read it.
President Merkin Muffley: Read it!
General "Buck" Turgidson: Ahem... The Duty Officer asked General Ripper to confirm the fact that he *had* issued the go code, and he said, uh, "Yes gentlemen, they are on their way in, and no one can bring them back. For the sake of our country, and our way of life, I suggest you get the rest of SAC in after them. Otherwise, we will be totally destroyed by Red retaliation. Uh, my boys will give you the best kind of start, 1400 megatons worth, and you sure as hell won't stop them now, uhuh. Uh, so let's get going, there's no other choice. God willing, we will prevail, in peace and freedom from fear, and in true health, through the purity and essence of our natural... fluids. God bless you all" and he hung up.
[beat]
General "Buck" Turgidson: Uh, we're, still trying to figure out the meaning of that last phrase, sir.
President Merkin Muffley: There's nothing to figure out, General Turgidson. This man is obviously a psychotic.
General "Buck" Turgidson: We-he-ell, uh, I'd like to hold off judgement on a thing like that, sir, until all the facts are in.
President Merkin Muffley: General Turgidson! When you instituted the human reliability tests, you *assured* me there was *no* possibility of such a thing *ever* occurring!
General "Buck" Turgidson: Well, I, uh, don't think it's quite fair to condemn a whole program because of a single slip-up, sir.

and Major KingKong, who rode the weapon down, to massacre those evil reds. (if i ever get the chance to kill 4 million russian people, this is how i want to do it, with my good hat.)

this is the stuff that makes me realise how dangerous we humans really are, mostly to ourselves.

P.S. I hate communists, and cowards.

How about armored cockpit doors? Or even better, no cockpit at all? UAV drones are becoming ever more intelligent and reliable, and even today most of the journey is made by an autopilot anyways...

i'd be more worried about the cheapskate who bought a counterfeit battery online for their laptop because it was $50 cheaper, and it vents with flame in the cargo hold or cabin.
apparently even dousing the thing with ice cubes won't put out the fire, which can pass 1500 degrees with an ongoing chain reaction of exploding shrapnel.

When I was a little boy and actually saw those hearings (TV was a special treat) no one explained what a "Communist" was to us. I had no idea what all the fuss was about. Adults appeared senseless.

Do Terror Alerts strike you as any less senseless? We are now expected to run from the unseen at the risk of falling victim to the unknown. No era has passed without its fair share of lunacy.Wanna see some horriffic ignorance?Check out the documentary Radio Bikini.Lots of footage of soldiers being exposed to radiation without any protection whatsoever.Very disturbing interview with a survivor of these exposures.I'll just say,I never even dreamed the end result was possible!

Sorry for late response. Eliminating the cockpit would eliminate the need for physical attack. Terrorists could just electronically hack into the remote-control system or jam external guidance references. There is no such thing as autonomous, robotic flight control, except in inertially guided missiles. Inertial guidance has never been accurate enough to touch down on a runway at the end of a flight, even if there were no wind or weather variations. It's good enough to get within hydrogen bomb kill radius after 5 minutes of inertial guidance and 15 minutes of ballistic flight. Please correct me if it's actually much better today, e.g. for submarine navigation.

[edit] does "autonomous" allow GPS receivers, or terrain-following cameras or radar, which can be pretty robust except in strategic warfare?
[edit edit] In state-of-the-art UAV drones, and terrain-following cruise missiles, and ICBMs, I think a failure rate of 1 per 100 flights would be considered excellent, even in the absence of countermeasures. I want live pilots when I'm an airline passenger. Elevators are different.

[e^3]
As for terrorists following Taliban and al Qaedas, most of whom appear to want Islamic states ruled "their way" for their benefit, and not directed or propped up by Western military force:
The threat from conventional weapons & sabotage, dirty bombs, and chemical weapons is diddly-squat compared to even one actual atomic bomb or (some would argue) a biological weapon attack. I sleep much better under the rational threat of terrorist nukes, than with the rational threat of global nuclear war. Some people give credit to Ronald Reagan for policies that put the latter to rest. I'm too much of a lib for that.

Speaking only for myself - I believe we (I) were "set up" for a political marketing agenda of fear.

I could have a calm dialog with you here & divorce myself from such manipulation.....but when it comes down to it; it still pushes my buttons.
My very first reaction to 9/11 was "it's like Pearl Harbor!" "'They' hit us first" but then I'm ripe for fill-in-the-blank who "they" are......
Some of the guys my age in the UK have the same reaction to their tragedy. Many western nations "lived under the mushroom cloud" at that period of history.
But I will NOT let myself be exploited through bigotry! That's one agenda I can see pretty clearly.
