"All you need to do is keep 2 machine guns in every cockpit"
Because everybody knows it's a good idea to fire guns on board an aircraft.

I just love "duck and cover", i saw it a couple of years ago when i saw a few documentaries about the atomic bombs ("trinity and beyond" is the best IMO) and got searching for videos on youtube.

Better than being unarmed when there's a Somalian terrorist on board.

Mythbusters "proved" that bullet holes in the fuselage won't down a plane. smile

Those who want to possess and use firearms most are usually those least suitable to be entrusted with them.

Am I the only one that misses Civil Defense? Obviously videos like this were part helpful advice, part safety theater, and part propaganda. Not all CD films and materials were this way, though. Some had very sensible advice about preparing for a disaster, such as how to stockpile weeks worth of supplies, how to construct a reinforced shelter, and how to maintain sanitary conditions during a prolonged period of sheltering. The minimum suggestions over at ready.gov seem like a joke by comparison, and there is no assistance or direction for anyone who might want to be prepared for a disaster lasting longer than 72 hours.

No,I love this stuff. As a chd growing up in the 1980s,I remember being bombarded with equally looney propaganda.Rocky,War Games,Spies Like Us,The Day After, etc. Not to mention all the cool Atomic era stuff my Grandmother used to give to me everytime I'd visit.I'd have to say that the 50s Nuke propaganda is probably what drew me to science and this hobby in the first place.Welll, that and Jetsons reruns but I'll quit while I'm ahead!

I grew up during those specific years of the "Duck & Cover" cartoons and Civil Defense rehearsals in schools in the USA. I have often wondered, when this occurred during the very late 1950's and 1960's - if this may have contributed to some of the social madness that carried over; -placing us in wars (that weren't wars; but a "police action") and a myriad of societal unrest, disappointment and a loss of faith in our government.
As a middle-aged man I look back and wonder how healthy it was to place a generation of children in a position where they literally grew up under the shadow of threatened death & annihilation.
