If you're just starting out, I recommend trying a compiler. I use Bascom (free) for the AVR micros I've been using and have been very satisfied with it. I sometimes contemplate learning assembly or C, but usually the desire to have my project working quickly is greater than my desire to learn another language.
I believe there are similar products for the PIC series but I've never really looked. I learned the AVR first so I stuck with it, both are fairly common and well supported in the hobby segment.

James, A compiler is software that takes a programming language like C or assembly and turns it into machine code. Bascom is simply a compiler for the BASIC language. MPLAB for PICs has a built in BASIC compiler.
Patrick, I would recommend learning assembling just to do simple tasks. Once you try to do more complicated things, learn C. It's pretty easy to port from assembly to C and C is much simpler for complicated programs.

I've never heard of this BASIC compiler in MPLAB.
The thing that turns assembly into machine code is an assembler, not a compiler.
Assembly is worth learning so you can see how a processor actually works. It will make you a better C programmer, help you understand pointers, stacks and so on. But it's a real pain to do big, complicated projects in assembly.

I guess I should have said that a BASIC compiler can be used in MPLAB. It doesn't come packaged in the installation. Just like the C18 compiler, PICBASIC Pro can be installed and used with MPLAB.
I agree completely with what Steve said; assembly will help you as a C programmer. I learned assembly first and when I decided to learn C, it came really easily.
By the way, Dr.H, that power supply is amazing! Maybe someday I'll get around to consolidating my gajillion supplies into one.
