this is if true a horrifying breach of civil liberties, and could potentially mean that people have to choose between keeping/getting a higher paid job in the Government and basically giving up social networking, unfiltered internet access etc, or remaining on a slave wage.

having seen references to people being denied employment for not handing over their facebook/twitter/email etc passwords, Link2 i can see this creeping into even lower paid jobs before long.

Sounds like the perfect way to achieve total control of the population- if you don't comply you become unemployable. 1984 was optimistic.

I hear this quote all the damn time:

"Honestly, if there is nothing to hide, why all the panic? Its like... "

I live in the USA; I happen to have a Constitution which has a Bill of Rights - which also has a 4th Amendment. The whole "if you have nothing to hide" argument holds no sway with me. However The USA is not alone.

There are some EXCELLENT papers written on CONCEPTUALIZING PRIVACY & it's time people pay some attention to them. The UK has had some very serious issues involving privacy concerns as had many Commonwealth countries.
This is a pretty good start:

We are ALL ......

My country (Greece) is now sold piece by piece to another (USA, see IMF), but not really, only to the 0.5% of the world's richest people....
Your country (USA) gave away almost all of the People's Rights after 9/11...
Who is the real winner i guess...

Looks like people in the US can't even access the site anymore.

I am really starting to loathe my government.

What you say is all true. But what is to be done?

Wikileaks is now operating from Switzerland, which has rejected calls to censor it:

Sounds like something out of "Fahrenheit 451"

However, reading classified documents in the public media without clearance is still illegal if you are in the service.

"Wars are won with the moral high-ground" (personnel in 2001)

"did not believe waterboarding to be a form of torture" (personnel after 2004)

...it will be difficult to convince anyone who didn't hold key stocks that the last ten years improved peoples lives.
