The wire size/resistance/heat is not the only factor in heating of transformers. There is also eddy current losses, which means Killa's comment still holds plenty of truth.

there core is actually pretty thin ( looking at top of transformer core), but its got a huge diameter (hight wise)

And don't forget saturation. Modern MOTs operate in saturation which creates a lot of heat. A larger core will not saturate as easily.
Altogether it looks like a properly designed MOT. You said it was really old, so it must have been before engineers realized they could save a buck by skimping on on the metal. Good find!
You know, considering how well-made it is, you might want it to last a long time. If that's correct, I'd recommend against wiring your stack's output in series and stressing the secondary insulation.
