I think there is a bit of truth and a great deal of exaggeration in any business dialog.
NTE blamed a great deal of it's "mis-marked" items on China. China also has a VERY competitive market in certain (especially HV) components. They can easily sell a HV diode for $3 where a US or EU company (using plants in Asia!) sells these for $10.

The pitch of "buy American" is as hollow as a Mexican manufactured Chevy or an Indian mfg Harley (please don't take offense: it's just an example). The real counterfeits are often production runs that don't meet specs and are stamped as a common or popular component of the familiar package (TO-220, etc) & these are often done by the middle-man company (such as NTE).

Disclaimer: This is just an opinion based on personal experiences & in no manner should reflect on the character of a fine business and it's ethics.

I hear a lot of stories about NTE peddling junk. I hadn't heard of them blaming it on the Chinese before. smile I don't trust NTE and would never buy their "equivalent" parts.

On my other favourite forum, we recently had a thread about fake TO-3 transistors from Hong Kong Ebay sellers. I bought a set of the alleged fakes out of curiosity, and what do you know, they are fake. smile

The Chinese are perfectly capable of making high-quality electronics. They just like to sell all the junk and rejects too, and that's what you'll get if you're not strict about quality control when dealing with them. Case in point: If you buy a bare SSC-P7 LED from DealExtreme, you get one of the rejects that wasn't good enough to go in any of their flashlight or bike light products.

Worse than Mexican made, Chevrolets nowadays are rebadged Daewoos.

UPDATE: I got the IRFP260s in yesterday - just hooked them up and they seem to run fine with the 24v coil. Performance seems the same and the heatsink does not seem to run so hot - but this could turn out to be a bad thing, as my component to sink interface could be dodgy.

I suspect the IRFP260 mosfets I bought for my ZVS are fake because they have a rough-textured package, unlike the one from jameco which had a smoother package. But if they are fakes, they've been faked pretty well because they handled up to 45 amps so far, and they have a lower RDS ON than the jameco IR fets. They work well so I'm happy.

As for the sscp7's from DX, the two I bought handled 3A @ 3.7 V quite well. If they were rejects I suspect they would've died when I fed them that.

Edit: Grr, ninja post.

Well there's an easy way to tell if you're interface is broken; feel the fet itself. If it's hot then you need more heat goop, if it's cold then it's just running cold.

Link2

It started out a thread about repairing an audio amp, and degenerated into a discussion on fake transistors.

The China issue is really no reflection of the country's products per se' but often companies buying in countries with very large out-sourced factories will sell off their factory seconds, "no pass", or simple blemished materiel.
If the sale was a "blemished unit sale" at a substantial saving some of them may be real junk (thrown in the wrong bin) obviously.

On a marginal product;not tested to spec and binned (then resold & re-labeled) a more efficient heat sink or things even more esoteric may be just the small alteration that could spell the difference between functional and not.

What I have a hard time with is that a company would sell individual fakes making little to no money & soiling it's reputation substantially.

I only wanted to add that NTE had been confronted with this issue (as it IS extremely serious) & the roll-off answer I had been told by another individual was "blame it on China (or whatever country you like in reality)".

very interesting thread Steve, i did not know things where so bad, if you can not trust a major distributor, what can you do? The post that claimed that factory shipments are hijacked and original items replaced by counterfeits, OMG, i think this could happend but maybe one in the million? Else things are really bad...

Anyway, i know there are some fake Geyer breakers sold here...
