Hi all,

i also saw some ceramic ones Link2 !But they seem quite thick, and ceramic? Is that a good heat conductor? All i know is that F1 cars (and some porsches) have ceramic brakes, or is that carbon-fiber... confused
Anyway, they are produced and sold, so they should be good for some application. The US seller describes them as "HIGH FREQ".

It's likey mot a fabulous heat conductor. If you want to use ceramic go for beryllium oxide ceramic. It conducts heat very well.

OK so I salvaged a heatsink, pads and collars from an old TV set (another good source for these is old ATX power supplies).

This seems to have helped enormously - the coil is much more robust, and the heatsink is getting quite warm over the course of each run. That seems to have stabilised the MOSFETS.

The new batch of IRF3205s showed up yesterday, but then I discovered that I'd placed an order for 20 of the wrong type :(
So.... I ordered some from Hong Kong instead for very little money.

Regarding the arcing to the case, yes I have no adequate ground on one of the sockets in the basement, so I connected to a different one, and it turns out that the coil no longer works - worn insulation on the coil ground connector was to blame - this was arcing to the case and producing the "shock" - along with lots of other potential problems. It's all straightened out now.

Those ceramic insulators might actually be BeO, I wouldn't go smashing them up.

BeO has 10 times the thermal conductivity of alumina, and I believe alumina is a little better than the usual mica or silpads.

Nice, i'm glad to hear you found the problem and i believe that after this little repair the coil will run fine

PS. please check out the ground issue... rolleyes

Lately, i've been using kapton + silicone compound
i just stick a bit of kapton tape on the heatsink for insulation and then have the compound between the kapton and the FETs. Seems to work quite well.

Yeah me too - although I think I might be redesigning the case - there's not really enough room in the one that I bought, and I want to add a fan.

I have a really cool (pun intended) CPU heatsink and fan that if I can just drill and tap would make an excellent home for the MOSFETs.

So I think this thread has run its course - a big thank you to all those who helped!

If anyone is interested in reproducing the Skori 12 and 24v coils feel free to drop me a line through my website. I think I now know enough about them to be helpful. :)

i would be very careful about getting anything from china, if they are cheap they are more likely to be fake.

Wow - what's the story with those?

I've never had a problem with buying from China - but there's always a first time...
