FashMHZ-have you used a new touchpad? They are an order of magnitude better than they were at the turn of the century...

Did you find the refurbised dell's?

I rather like the Stinkpads and the nipple mouse thingie that they use. I have two old Thinkpad 600s that I use for a bunch of things. I've been using them as a sort of 21st century version of DJ turntables lately, and I must admit that scratching with the nipple mouse (and 100ms of latency) is pretty much impossible. :-< The batteries are now second-sourced and cost about $50.

Having said that, I don't mind touchpads either, as long as the "tap to click" function isn't turned on. mistrust

I tried a Toshiba Qosmio today and thought it was pretty cool. The model I saw had a neat 17" widescreen display with some sort of mojo similar to Sony's X-Black treatment, and the battery life was pretty good. It was extremely big and heavy, though, and came with XP Media Center.

Are you serious? I find that rather strange, since I really like the tap-function; so I don't have to press some hard-to-press buttons all the time...

Well, I talked with a few people and here is what’s being mulled over for now:

The recent Toshibas tend to overheat and cut-out if the ram expansion slot is used (notable support for *nix is pretty good though.)

Acer – never made anything reliable in the history of their product lines to my recollection. For what they offer the prices are bad too.

Sony Vaio – not an option as one can’t upgrade it without proprietary 3rd party BIOS.

The Compaqs are pretty heavy, but as I am looking for desktop replacements this is not a huge issue. For the cost I can’t ignore the 3D acceleration card as it is for a CAD based platforms.

I am leaning toward the Toshiba for the Media platform (with the OEM RAM module and lower HD speed to cut down on heat) and the Compaq’s for the lower end presentation units – this seems to provide the best value and flexibility.

Any thoughts?

(Ah I often recall the old Palm PDA that auto-tapped as it started to wear out.)
