Well you know before i typed that, everyone that saw the title wondered the same thing cheesey. Like electronics, Harley Davidson is not a hobby, it is a state of mind tongue

I know that Honda cars and Sony TVs for the UK market are made in the UK. How is this any worse?

There are more and more seriously rich people in India. Maybe H-D are planning for the time when it'll overtake the US as a world superpower.

India is full of Royal Enfield motorbikes, a British brand that was made under license in Madras since 1955. Now the Indian made ones get exported back to the UK.

The Jaguar brand is owned by the Indian Tata car company, who plan to "revitalize" it. At least the Jags are still made in the UK for now.

Don't forget the "Hindustan Ambassador" Link2 - a reworked 1956 Morris Oxford III - been made in India since 1958 and still going strong... Hindustan Motors (the manufacturer) are still selling 100,000 a year Link2 ...

Cheers

Okay folks. Lets stop the namecalling and please stay on topic. Contrary to what *some* people may believe, this post is simply pointing out some interesting globalization news regarding one of our most iconic US brands. And since I own two Harley's myself (one of which that I am restoring with a friend of mine), I thought it would be an interesting subject to discuss. So please keep on topic and keep the namecalling to yourself, otherwise you're post will be deleted and the thread locked.

That said, I did look up the requirements for MADE IN THE USA, and apparently this is regulated by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) which states that a product must "all or virtually all made" in the US. The FTC did propose an amendment in 1996 which only require a product to have 75% of the manufacturing costs in the US to meet the MADE IN THE USA requirement, but this was never passed.

Also, its important to note that Harley laid off nearly 25% of its workforce over the past 16 months, or 3500 employees (according to various news sources), so i'm sure this doesn't bode well with the lot of them. Of course, if this helps create more US jobs, by shipping more parts, then it could be beneficial, at least in the short term, as someone here had already stated.

Yes, Harley LOST jobs.
When BOTH US political parties pushed NAFTA & GATT I believe I was the only one of my personal circle of friends and family to really read the damn things (dull is not a word that comes close). However I said that the US would loose jobs, it's manufacturing base, & basically the world wide growth potential for select businesses would be the basic thrust. Most everyone who even had an opinion told me I was incorrect and that NAFTA was the best thing for all concerned.
I have been proven correct in every one of the statements I made; much to the embarrassment of some who foolishly, didn't read the damn thing (I have a tough time with opinions where some have no facts to even begin a discussion).

India's entertainment industry is thriving & will eventually have a similar impact as the American one. We will eventually become a service-oriented economy - beyond what it is now and [what little] native manufacturing we have, will eventually be lost.

I believe that in the long run, in terms of what would have been best for the working people of the USA, NAFTA was a terrible mistake. The Common Wealth countries had seen what the Asian market did to their manufacturing even with manufacturing "hand outs" to N. Ireland, NSW, Sydney - they still lost a great deal of their indigenous manufacturing jobs & became forced to steer their workforce in entirely new (& often unwelcome) directions.
Is that a bad thing in total? Only time will tell.
But for the man who works for a living and does not own the means of production [he] is not a beneficiary of NAFTA. It really WAS designed that way.
It (NAFTA) was never MADE to benefit the economy's of individual nations.

Of course not. So many companies that ship their manufacturing overseas just increase the profit margins of the companies - the customers don't see those savings.

I think economic growth in this country is done. We're seeing 10% unemployment rates which is now on par to what most of Europe has and I believe it will be the norm. I don't think you'll see unemployment rates fall below that in the near term or perhaps ever. The manufacturing base in the US is just done.

The media and government in this country are claiming economic gains because of a somewhat improving stock market, but it really doesn't have any basis - just an illusion created from all the top investors / higher ups in companies buying up stock in their companies, thus artificially inflating stock prices, with "funny" money printed by the US government to bail them out.

Dan, with your remarks in this post, you crossed a line you shouldn't have. This is general chatting, and demanding strict adherence to topic is just plain poppycock.
Now you may claim topic to be just what you _later_ said it is, but anyone with a minimum of social skill, can see that you are out to tease Dr. Spark by rewording his avatar. Of course, it is your right to tease a member of the forum, here in general chatting. Still doing so, and knowing how he is going to take that, is what makes you what you are. (readers can fill in their own wording here:______).

I refuse to be threatened like that on what is equally as well _my_ forum, and I also strongly suggest that you stop any of your tendencies to perform moderator bullying.
Just because you have the ability to censor doesn't mean that you should do so!.
I have no objections to this thread being locked, as the piece of trash it was from the start, however, I may assure you that if you delete this entry, I am going to make my presence felt!

Cheers, Finn Hammer
