Hear, all ye good people, hear what this brilliant and eloquent speaker has to say!
Go Steve! Stuff those commy scumbags!

Perhaps I should revive the 'post a picture of yourself here' thread...
Unfortunately for me, Australia's Alan Sharps, Richie Burnetts and Finn Hammers are separated by a few thousand kilometres of desert.

Maybe I can build a lifter big enough to fly me across the continent to TDU cheesey

I know one other kid who was really interested in HV who lives about half an hour away. Sadly he's more interested in drugs than electronics now. His workshop is still full of unused microwave parts and boxes of flybacks, but now there's a big cardboard box in the back with a light sticking out of the top and pot growing inside sad

From my perspective, I would say that what Steve identifies as an anti-engineering attitude really extends to an all around anti-science attitude - my interest in and especially the time i spend on theoretical physics is often ridiculed, and most people I have met who claim to be interested in physics put very little effort into actually doing physics. People will talk at length about the "profound philosophical implications" of quantum mechanics and string theory but not be bothered by the fact that that they couldn't tell you what the units of power are.

Kieth, I think you and Steve hit the nail on the head. I got quite depressed listening to a talk-back radio show a few nights ago. The announcer (who is a bit right wing, and thankfully fended off the air some of the more ignorant callers) was asking people to call in with their opinion on science, and whether they "trust" science/scientists/physicists etc. A large part of the discussion was (non-embryonic) stem-cell research.

There were some good pro-science calls that would have appealed to the masses; a fellow who had an injury at work and lost both eyes (would have been blind) explained how his surgeon had facilitated growth of particular cells which they used to revive his vision to a level almost as good as it was before the accident.

Unfortunately, however, a lot of intelligent-design/creationists/religious zealots were also calling up to shame the man saying that god had intended for him to go blind, blah blah blah...

A very tricky topic covered was also abortion - namely, the 100,000 abortions (annually) in Australia all had stem cells that could be used... but that's a whole different ethical ballgame.

The main thing that upset me though was the numerous callers who claimed that govwernment-funded research was dwindling and private corporations were paying people to do research, and this only benefitted the corporation. Um, are we supposed to work for free?!

People, (in their total ignorance, I reckon) blamed 'big business' on citizens not doing their own research and learning 'for the fun of it'. First I'd say that's not true, and there are clever people doing clever things, learning, and/or making money from what they do (just look at a couple of guys here on 4hv.. TDU, EVR). I think this is also accentuated by the fact that knowledge is being devalued by society.

I then got annoyed to hear a few people call in to complain that secondary school physics, chemistry, etc contained too much in the way of mathematics, and that the syllabus should be dumbed down. I won't go further on that one.

I suppose this challenged who I was, and who I'd be in my future, and if all my interests will lead to an end, and thats why it was distressing to hear so many stupid people voice their unwarranted opinions. There's so much more I could say, but it would lead me outside the scope of this thread.

I have some friends who play DnD and I'm in a similar boat. It's not exactly my thing but it's fun for a geek social gathering.

Hello,
Im Matt, and have been a member of 4hv since it first started out WAY back when Sam Barros was out "ruling" his board.Ahh, Sam....

Im 22, majoring in EE at FSU here in the USA. Ive been in to electronics ever since i saw someone short a battery with a wire from a trashbag when i was in like 1st grade. From then on its been a long trip and cant think of anything else better for me than EE(although i do love psychology and classics).

As for sports i played basketball and football in highschool and played for a year here for the Seminoles(anyone here a Nole fan?)I quit due to issues with the coaches as well as class.

As for future goals, i hope to go into alternative energy development, but wouldnt mind building weapons for the military angry (hey its a paycheck).

Matt

I lust for the blood of the perpetrators of this atrocity! How could anyone say such a thing? That's terrible. It's a shame that those pharisaic bastards have such a huge influence, there are plenty of good religious people out there, but they're often quieter.

Oh well. Anyway, about me.:

I live in a small finished off section of the attic of a gray farm house in Southern Maine, a couple hours away from where Chris Russell lives. Imagine my surprise when I realized THAT. It's not every day that you find another Mainer on the internet, much less a technologically inclined one. That may only make sense to those who are familiar with this area, but I digress. Back to me...
My interest in electricty has been prevalent since about 2 years of age, when I was found examining some outlets near the floor in our first home. That fascination has grown, and now most anything technologically oriented interests me. I'm only one person though, so like anyone else, I have to refine my interests to get anything done. My main, unfailing interest lies in computers, especially where small, specialized systems are concerned (embedded network devices and whatnot). Other interests range from writing to artificial intelligence to subcultures (is that possible? can one do that? I seem to.)
Aside from my intellectual interests, I like to ride my mountain bike on the snowmobile trails year round, I enjoy camping and backpacking, and I have been a rock climber since age 7.

Hi all - my name is Kevin and I'm 24. I started messing with electronics when I was 6 y/o. I'd take everything apart to try and "improve" it...it got some people pretty upset. I used to get grab-boxes of parts from RadioShack for birthdays, etc...it's hilarious to see old family videos of me jumping up and down with excitment over some motors and batteries. I discovered that coils could launch things...but not very far with only 9-volt batteries. My parents were very protective of me and kept me from the 110....well, they thought they did. I got zapped quite a bit and am still here to tell about it.

Then I got a computer, a 286, 8mhz, EGA graphics, 20mb hard drive. I still have the motherboard as a reminder of where it all began. That started me in a different direction, and electronics took a back seat through late middle and high school. I designed and started selling my first software product in 8th grade. I was also building computers from parts, which made some extra $$$. In high school I was actually employed to work on their network and didn't have to go to class for half the day cheesey ...and teacher's paid me to fix their personal PCs. I was an A student through college and I continued selling software to end up where I am today - self employed software developer.

About 3 years ago I started getting into serious electric R/C and electronics again. I still had all my parts, even some of those I got when I was 8. But that wasn't enough, I needed an upgrade wink Then I found this forum and all hell broke loose...
