Maybe a circuit set up so that flipping a switch disconnects a battery charger and connects it to the speaker, and switching it off attaches the battery to the charger? Not small by any means, just an idea.

No need to disconnect the charger, you can leave a trickle charger on the battery indefinitely.

I was thinking that it would create a bunch of annoying 60HZ hum in the speaker, I know the one I have sure would.
