Bipolar Desktop PLL
Desmogod, Thu May 18 2006, 03:33AMI'm currently in the process of making a bipolar coil(s) as a bit of a desktop display model for work.
Everyone at work knows I love my coils, but no one has really seen one, so I would love to have something "Speccy" to show off.
They are only going to be small, maybe 5 inches tall each and maybe an inch in diameter with c 400 turns each.
My questions are thus, What way would you guys run these for the most effective display with the biggest "cool" factor.
I would love to add an audio mod to it, so PLL is looking like the way to go. but also there is something nice about small SGTC's. On the other hand, I know the 74HC14 circuit like the back of my hand and know it's pretty stable. (NOT saying the PLL isn't!)
Also, do I need to run 2 x halfbridges? or 2 x driver boards? Or is that fact that the coils will be identical (I'll be counting the turns to ensure they are) mean that I can effectively run 2 primaries from the same bridge?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I suppose you could run them both in series or parallel... But make sure that they are exactly the same or the one that isn't feeding the driver is going to be out of tune.
I would stay away from sgtc's just because they are so loud... The 60hz humm from a pll sstc is nothing compared to a sgtc... My little coil (about the same dimensions as you proposed) was extremely loud, not something I would fire up in the workplace...
I would go for the pll, because it is pretty damn efficient (well until you audiomod it, then it gets out of tune), so you don't need to lug around big huge heat sinks... Audomod would be cool XD
How about making a vttc out of those 811a's I sent you? The transformers would weigh a ton, but you would have a decently quiet/tame coil that is just about indestructible...

Those 811A's are going to make my "The Don" VTTC. Kind of a tribute to the olden days and my grandfather ;)
I like the idea of audio modded SSTC as a display coil, because it really adds a little something extra.

This sounds nifty.
You can put the primaries in series, you realise... you don't necessarily have to build two separate bridges... BUT depending on the winding direction of each coil, and the winding direction of your primaries, the two coils' sparks will either hit each other or avoid each other =P

Am I correct in thinking that I won't need an earth for this system either?
just tie the coils together?
