What to do with 20 Farads?

AndrewM, Wed May 17 2006, 03:15PM

My roomate works for Landys & Gyr, who make electrical meters (like for the side of your house). He brought me a huge box of meter boards, and each has a nice backup capacitor, I think about 1F.

What can I do with these low voltage high capacity capacitors?

Discuss.

They are very popular for small robots as battery substitution. They even have them find thier own charger when the cap gets low.

Why not make a solar powered night light and amaze your friends. You can even say "No" if they ask whether you cheated by using batteries. :P

You can join the long running 4HV capacitor car competition. The rules are 15 joules or less, the longest distance wins.

You can also make a few of these: http://sciencezero.org/electronics/backuplight.htm

I happen to have 3 50F/2,5v (Powerstor B series) and around 6 10F/2,5v (Elna Dynacap) here.
These are low impedance (<0.1Ohm and can easily melt 1.5mm solder wire)...
Maybe i find some use for them.
The typical 1F 5.5v have around 20-200ohm ESR.

Basically the same thing you could do with a box full of rechargeable batteries.

I used to have tons of these caps from Landis/Gyr meters. I made backup lights with some of them: Link2 . What kinds of boards are these, the type that contain 4 caps on each?

Maybe he could find a miniature SSTC and charge himself with a resonator.
He'l only have to ground himself (or just a plate close to ground for more neatness but less efficiency)

Even with tens of farads of capacity at low voltages such as 2,5 or 5 V it's hard to acheive energies higher than few hundred joules at most.

Compared to a single 1Ah 9V battery wich would have ultimate 32400 joules of energy.
And we still manage to get them empty pretty fast.

What's the current record..?

I think I am in the lead at around 700 meters, at least I have not heard about anyone going further.

Edit:
The details are obviously top secret but here is a video: http://sciencezero.org/download/bil-1.wmv

EDIT: It's not much visible, I guess any more detail is top secret :P

What would happen if you charged one of these guys up and hit it with a hammer? Otherwise, I think solar powered night lights is a good idea.

"I never thought I would say this, but it might be wise to ground your hammer if you do try to smash one."

Dosen't really concern this paticular smashing, but eye protection and a long sleeve shirt are in order, if it were tried. My geuss is that the cap would discharge inside iteself, flashboil some electrolyte, and end like this.

I guess you would end up with a broken cap. Their very high internal resistance prevents anything spectacular from happening.
