Ideas for IGBTs
Wolfram, Thu May 11 2006, 08:08PMI have just acquired a couple of hundred of these IGBTs:
I have been thinking of what to do with them, and I started this thread in the hope that someone here might have any good ideas.
They are way too small for a normal DRSSTC, and too slow for a small DRSSTC, but maybe for a conventional TC? The datasheet states the max frequency as >200kHz in resonant mode, so they might be good for this. My other ideas include a small induction heater and a powerful flyback driver. Any thoughts?

I know several, including Adam Horden, have been using IGBTs in paralleled fashion to create "higher power" IGBTs.

They look good/excellent for flyback operation;
either Automotive ignition coil OR crt flyback transformer.
They would be good for a few hundred watts as a flourescent or CCFL lamp driver/invertor.
With such relatively low gate charge/capacitance
you could parallel them for higher power/current
for SSTC/DRSSTC etc.
They could be good for driving SSTC/DRSSTC GDT.
Class-AB audio amplifier.
Class-A (push/pull) audio amplifier?
PERFECT for CFPR (zvs/zcs -'royer') invertor / CW SSTC
dc motor control bridge.
Linear OR switching general purpose hobby power supply.
must be more uses than you've got devices!

Thanks for all the great suggestions, I'll have to try out some of these over the weekend.
Fig. 11 on page 6 of the datasheet tells switching loss vs. Ic, do these numbers also apply to resonant mode?

Those look like they would work pretty well for a zvs driver
You could run off full wave rectified mains (well in the us at least) at like 5a and only have like 10w of power dissipation in the fets...
Is there any way I could get a few of them?
I believe the switching losses for running resonant mode should be where the v and c are 0 on teh graph...

First CFPR flyback driver test failed spectacularly. At 20V input one of the IGBTs blew a hole in the package. Below 20V I got 1mm arcs. Lots of things could have been wrong, maybe too few turns on series inductor or too low gate supply (only 9V).

Since they have a very high pulse current, why not build one of these.

Hi,
Yes I use 5 IGBTS rated at 250A ICM each and run them upto 1500A. In Tesla Coil use and by drving the gates at 30V I can get allmost double this. I have used this method succsessfully on a couple of my coils now.
