Amateur Radio

Dave Marshall, Mon Feb 06 2006, 06:32PM

As members begin the mass migration to this new forum, I'd like for those among us with amateur radio licenses to post a little about themselves. It would be very interesting to get a few QSOs between members going, perhaps even an HF round-table sometime. People who are interested in attaining a license feel free to ask questions of the operators you see listed here. If your question warrants, I'll spin it off into a new thread.

My callsign is AB3I, I'm an extra class operator located in Warner Robins, GA. I've been licensed since January of 2000, when I was 15 years old. My previous callsign was KB3EQA.

I'm active on VHF/UHF FM, satellites and weak station, as well as 80-6m HF single side band and a couple digital modes, primarily PSK31 and SSTV. On occasion you'll find me prowling the CW bands looking for a specific continent/country/state. My favorite aspect of the hobby is homebrew, if I can't build it myself, chances are I don't really need it. I do have a commercial rig, but thats mostly because I needed something small enough to mount in the car :)

Currently my big focus is DXCC and WAS. Starting January 1st I'll be starting from scratch and attempting to get both awards in 12 months.

My setup is two Yaesu FT-857D HF/VHF/UHF mobile rigs, and a Kenwood TH-F6A 144/220/440Mhz triband handheld. I've got a pair of Potato Masher VHF/UHF satellite antennas, a set of VHF/UHF 7 element quads, a Moxon 2 element 20 meter beam, and a 50' all band vertical.

You can find me primarily on 80, 60, and 20 meters, as well as the satellites. On HF I'm typically on PSK or voice. I also go to most of the hamfests in the southeast.

My call is KB1FYR, I'm a technician class licensee, licensed in 2000. I'm not very active, although every once in a while I get a project that brings me back to ham radio.

My setup consists of an Alinco DJ-V5T (7W 2m/440/wide range recieve/transmit mod), a 2m/440 ringo ranger, and a kantronics KAM with several upgrades.

I'm in the hobby for the projects, not socializing, so you aren't likely to hear me on the local repeater.

My Callsign is KE5DKD, I am a technician class operator. I Live in Enid, Oklahoma, and usually stay on the 2m band.

I only have an Icom IC-V8 for mobile use right now, but plan on getting some more equipment when I can afford to do so.

Matt, Tue Feb 07 2006, 08:11PM

KC0UDT, technician since May I believe.

IC-V8000 with a copper j-pole for home use, and I take the V8000 with me on the road using a 2m 3/4 wave antenna.

I also have a FT-50R, but it's with my mom at the moment since she just got her license.

Most of my work is on 2m, since 70cm seems to NEVER have activity around here. I'm currently also studying for General.

Steve Conner, Wed Feb 08 2006, 11:39AM

Glad to hear Dave got his vanity callsign ;) and good to hear there are plenty of hams here. I got my licence (callsign: GM0TET) when I was at high school back in the 90s sometime. Soon after I went to university, I decided ham radio "wasn't cool", sold all my rigs and let my licence lapse.

In the last year or so, my interest in Tesla coils brought me full circle back to radio and I decided to give it a try again. I bought a couple of second-hand rigs (a FT-757GXIII and a TR-751E) and had fun building some antennas, power supplies, and an ATU. I'm currently active on 2m and the 10, 14 and 18MHz HF bands. I would like to be on 3.5MHz too, but I haven't figured out how to build an effective 80m antenna at my location, a top floor apartment.

I might start a radio shack thread to show my home-brew radio projects, does anyone else think this is a good idea? If so should it go in here, or the projects board?

Hi Steve,

Have you considered trying to make a normal mode helix antenna at 80 meters? They are not as efficient as a good ol' dipole, but you should get enough performance to have some fun!

Cheers!

PS - I had a amateur licence when I was living in the USA (Technician, N9KWL..used to work 23 and 13 cm bands with data and ATV), but it expired in 2003... Should get it again... x)

KD6KUI, Advanced class since 1993. (yes, I was 13 when I got my advanced class license) I've been thinking recently about upgrading to extra, now that morse is no longer in the way, but I do rather enjoy holding a license of a class that nobody can get into anymore.

I am not very active these days, but I am trying to find some sort of a niche that I can operate in. I have a relatively poor location for radio, since my apartment is underground on three sides, so I am leaning towards some sort of mobile DX. We'll see!

I had a technician license (N1NNJ) but it expired a couple of years ago. I passed the test through advanced but hadn't the patience for learning code so technician was it. Perhaps I'll get back into it one of these days after I sell the wife and kids. smile

N8WQF - Extra class, Pensacola, FL.

Some of my amateur radio activities include foxhunts (transmitter locating), amateur radio hamfests, amateur radio field day events, and the design and construction of antennas and equipment. I also enjoy helping with radio communications for special events such as SCCA road rallies, sled dog races (UP 200 in Michigan), and triathlons.

Hi,
I'm ON3LB, name is Luke, living in Antwerp /Belgium. i'm a Ham since 1980, and had different callsigns trough the years (on8py - on9aav).
I found 4hv, after enjoying some fun last week on the ham meeting, with a jacobsladder.
I've worked on a TC years ago, and got bitten by the HV bug again smile .
Working conditions :
Yaesu FT 817,TR-9000, 20m dipole, Permanent WIFI link over 7.5 Km using a 21db Grid antenna, and a commercial AP. I'm also a memeber of WirelessAntwerpen a ham wifi group who established a full wifi network over our town (Link2

At the moment working on a minirailgun project, and getting all parts. The Cap Charging unit is finished, and working.

Nice to hear this board has lot's of Ham's, sadly enough none from Belgium (as far that I know)

My echolink node nr : 78206
QRV local on : 438.800 Mhz
Echolink Repeater : 430.150 Mhz (Antwerp)

Added some pic's of the antenna and small shack

Hi,

My call is PE2GRT, I am a British expatriate living in the Netherlands. I'm always up for a good chat in English no matter :) I rarely get to use the radio these days but you could give me an excuse to put some time into it.

I also idle in #iota and #cqdx from time to time on the CQDX IRC server irc.radiochat.org - useful for picking up a sked sometimes.
Re: Amateur Radio
GODSFUSION, Tue Feb 21 2006, 12:55AM

Well i got my license in 2000 (KB1FOU) at age thirteen. I had a handheld up untill this past christmas when the antenna snapped off at the connector. It was a Yeasu vx-150. i havent had much time to try and repaire it, and i dont have another rig or any money to buy one.

So for the past few months ive been listening in on the fourtey meter band with a modded signal core surplus radio. Its a little depressing but with college and having to set up some kin of respectable life i just havent had the time.

Im hopeing to get cw and my next ticket but, again i dont have to time. im on Echolink a little , but i really dont consider it a real mode of operation.

Im also hoping to participate in Army MARS sometime soon.

That sums it about up...

Dave Marshall, Tue Feb 21 2006, 01:42AM

Wayne, I'd strongly recommend you try for your general class ticket. You'd be amazed what you can do on 40 meters with a $15 transmitter and a bit of wire. It is time consuming, but it only really took me a week to get the code down pat once I found a lull in life where I had a few down days.

ZL2TUD
Had the call since 1975 it used to be a technician license but they have dropped the morse requirement here and I'm now a full license

I have a TS440s and IC211 although both have had no use over the last few years due to house renovations and sailing commitments. Set up a net and post and I might find the time to throw up an antenna

M3KVA soon to be (2E0KVA) if not taken

Im Adam K, my station is located in the midlands, i run an old FT101-E HF set and i normaly use 80 meters phone, as its the widest, my antenna is at the moment a end fed long wire.

I also run a 2m rig as well, but i havent operated for a while.

i have in the past transmitted SSTV to other stations, and RTTY

Im hoping to pass the advanced licence and be able to make and use large homebrew linear amplifers.

VK8NPF, Standard licence in Australia.

I was active for a few months, then 2m kind of got very boring. Someday I'll start up again with HF equipment, whenever I have the time/can be bothered.

I usually just listen to the scanner instead. You'd be lucky to hear 10 minutes of chatter on 2m in our city. Its good how we have an IRLP node (6800) though, makes for some interesting listening sometimes.

Extreme Electronics, Fri May 12 2006, 02:14PM

G6LUB In Nottingham UK - Licence lapsed about 10 years ago, due to both working and playing with microwave radio systems.

My interests were mainly microwave systems (10GHz & 24Ghz) for both voice and video, altough I did chat on 70cm & 2M (as there wern't many people to talk to at 10Ghz and the mobile setup was impossible smile )

I sold up the rest of my kit about 3 years ago to fund some TC'ing.

My callsign is GM0UIN. I've been licenced for over a decade, with a gap of a few years when I lived in various flats/apartments which were unsuitable for radio. I no longer do much in the way of building radio equipment, but I do still enjoy talking to people on HF, 2M and 70 CM.

RadioRigs

From left to right: Key KM-450 70CM rig, Kenwood TM-G707 2M/70CM rig, Yaesu FT-840 HF rig, with MFJ-945C antenna tuner, boxed-up SGC DSP board and speaker sitting on top, Yaesu VX-5 6M/2M/70CM handheld.

Been a very long time since I have bee on this site. Anyway Call sign is KX0Z, I hold an Amateur Extra Clas and a general radiotelephone lisc. Unfortunately I have more priveledges than I do time or equipment. Main thing I like is 2 meters and I try to get out during severe storm season to help weather spot. I suppose if I get back into it more someday I'll get back on the HF bands and work some code, although I am pretty rusty at the moment..

J. Aaron Holmes, Wed Jan 03 2007, 12:50AM

Wow...I've like, never bothered to visit the Electromagnetic Radiation forum, yet I've been on this board for most of a year. I should get major demerits! angry.

My callsign is N7OE, formerly KI7QM, formerly KB7SQY. Been a ham since early 1993, and an Extra Class since the days when you had to copy 20-words-per-minute CW in order to become one. Initially it seemed like a very lame thing indeed, however in the process of becoming proficient at CW, I ended up loving it! It became about the only mode I used on HF.

I've been mostly out of the hobby for about five years since moving to an area with antenna restrictions, however I'm just now moving again to an area without such restrictions, so I'm hoping to "get back into" ham radio. Most especially, I'd like to build some of my own QRP gear...maybe even use tubes to do so, since I've just encountered a ridiculous number of NOS triodes in a box at my parents' house. Fun, fun, fun...

One of the few aspects of the hobby that I've enjoyed a little during the past few years is direction finding (bunny/fox hunts). Among my stranger creations is a transmitter controller built from a Game Boy: http://silicon-arcana.com/ardf.htm

My license expires in just a couple of months...I hope I don't forget to renew suprised

Best regards,
Aaron, N7OE

Well, my upgrade and vanity callsign just went through, so say goodbye KD6KUI, Advanced. Say hello to NV1D, Extra Class! My "shack" currently consists of a Yaesu FT-857D, along with an antenna tuner and a computer interface so that I can do advanced DSP. For antennas, right now I have a magnetic loop antenna that covers 80m, 60m, 40m, 30m, and 20m. I also have hamsticks for every band from 6m to 80m, in case I decide to go mobile. I'm also currently building a multimode beacon for 30m.

I can recommend the Jingtong JT-208 VHF - 2.5 W 2m FM cheap chinese handheld,
I also have a Puxing PX-777 5W 2M FM handheld which is even better but a little more expensive.
Both have a UHF version also.

Sulaiman, thanks for the tip. I picked one up on ebay just now for $35. Not bad at all. I'll have to post more information once it arrives. Did you happen to attempt the microphone modification, or were you satisfied with the quality of the transmitted audio?
Re: Amateur Radio

With the JT-208 I had good reports of the audio so I did not do the modification (hole-drilling)

For even better audio I used one of the cheap "hand's-free' PTT-mic. with ear piece" accessories - very convenient.

I'm sure we could help, though a thread in the general science/electronics thread with more information on how you're planning on interfacing it would be a better place.

Also, you can upgrade any time you like without worrying about the code requirements... there are no longer *any* code requirements at any level in the US, just the written exam.

K1ULF, Extra, Got my licence in late 2007. Was SM3PFT in the 80th but dropped it when I started at college. Picked it up with the idea of doing telemetry for rockets but was absorbed by cheap software based radios (Softrock) so I ended up learning CW instead and never attempted any telemetry. I typically operate on 80m and 40m using straight key CW through a Softrock. ($31 piece of hardware that gives 80% of the funtionality of a $$$$$ Flexradio.)

I personally think this would be a great idea!
I actually get my first HF rig tomorrow, but it is only 5 Watts : - P - and I don't know if I'll have enough to get an amp...

if possible, maybe those who are out of reach could use an Echolink connection to get out to some other 4HV operators?
maybe we could setup a, sort of, "repeater network" with some volunteered hardware... this could allow for some various frequencies, useful for those with a technician class, or low-end gear...

Please keep the planning of QSOs and such to seperate threads on the EM Radiation board. Not only will it draw more attention, but it will prevent this thread from being pulled away from its purpose of cataloging 4HV's ham radio operators.

VK2HRO, Mon May 18 2009, 03:20AM

Ahh great - a new forum I have joined, also has a ham radio op section. Excellent!

My callsign is VK2HRO (same as my forum name), which means I am a standard class operator from Sydney Australia. Next weekend I am sitting my Advanced, and will change callsigns to VK2GTE

Chose GTE as a mate and I are building two turbocharger based gas turbine engine vehicles, his a thrust driven kart, mine an electric driven machine, with all the support gear on it for the kart.

I have an Icom 2100H for vhf, two puxing 888 hand helds (vhf and uhf) and an Icom 7000 as the main hf rig. Eventually I will upgrade the 7000 to a Yaesu FT2000D, and use the 7000 as a second hf rig, or for uhf.

Antenna are a dodgy home made 20m dipole, a bough buxcomm dipole, a vertical multibander for 40, 20, 15 and 10, and a 2/70 vertical, 8-9metres above my roof, which i can cover the entire sydney basin with just 30 watts :P

My longest distance contact was to ZA (15,000 km away), using 5 watts of power into a dodgy home made dipole, on psk 31. I was quite impressed with that contact!

Tech as of... YESTERDAY!
Waiting for my callsign and time to hook up the hand-me-down from a friend. It's an Icom IC-2100 that was given to him when he first got his tech, so it has some history and tradition. The closest city to me is Rogue River, Oregon. I live in a mountain "bowl" so we'll see what happens. The minute you pull into my driveway, cell service and most TV and FM radio stations cut out. Steve owns some towers in my area however, so we'll see if I can't work something out.
My main reason for signing up is for the projects and the knowledge, but we'll see where it takes me. ;]

EDIT:
Had some time before work, added some more info.

I will setup my antenna maybe in next week. I can transmit AM/CW only, but SSB receiving is possible.

VK2HRO, Fri May 29 2009, 03:22AM

forgot to mention I failed my exam by 4 questions. I didn't study hard enough - it was encouragement to study hard (which is what I am doing) to sit the test again on tuesday!

I really want to get my advance, because it comes with extra priviledges, and I dont blow $80 each time I fail!!! :D

aonomus, Fri May 29 2009, 07:12AM

Hi all, I'm about to go for my ham test on Sunday, my practice attempts are just a hair over 80% (what I need to pass with basic+ to get access to HF). Expect me to get my ticket, I already have my rig, just need an antenna.

A quick update. I spoke to aonomus yesterday, he passed the test with an 86%! Congrats aonomus, look forward to hearing you on the air!

This is VA3MOO monitoring. (Seriously!)

I have to get some 300ohm twinlead to make a dual band J-pole for local stuff. Unfortunately I found out that we (me and several uni students renting the townhouse) will have to move out by the end of August, so I won't set up a HF antenna yet.
Re: Amateur Radio
BlakFyre, Wed Jun 03 2009, 06:35AM

As of yesterday ('bout time!) I am AKA KF7CXM!
I've yet to get that radio installed in my car as I'm to busy wrapping up my physics project (coil gun).
Re: Amateur Radio
VK2HRO, Thu Jun 04 2009, 10:14PM

BlakFyre, you recieved what I am about to hand down to a mate of mine who just got his foundation license, an ICOM 2100.

I will pass mine on (which was given to me when I passed my standard (I didnt bother with foundation), when I buy a unit to replace it - probably get the icom 208h, then start saving for the Yaesu FT-2000 :)

My poor HF vertical is now bent at about the halfway point by some strong wind, and is leaning in the middle at around 20°. I will pull it down, along with the Dogdgy Dipole (my homemade dipole which works well) and replace them both. The dodgy is more suited to camping trips and is a coil loaded design for 40 and 20. I'll replace it with a 80/40/20 dipole, and put up a sirio S2016 for 15-10.

The diamond dualbander survived the winds, and is still standing strong on top of its 6m mast clamped to a satellite television tripod on the roof. That thing really gets out well, considering I am in a RF black spot, buildings on 3 sides etc.
Re: Amateur Radio
aonomus, Mon Jun 08 2009, 05:52AM

So for anyone trying to log interesting calls, in about 2 weeks, me and another friend will be roadtripping down from Toronto, Ontario to Virginia Beach, Virginia, chatting on local 2m repeaters as we go.

When I have more travel details I'll let you guys know, but if you're looking for the odd chat with a pair of VA3's, and you are around the east coast between Toronto and Virginia Beach, we will likely be roadtripping on the 17th and 18th (and 22nd/23rd on the way back up).
Re: Amateur Radio
VK2HRO, Tue Jun 09 2009, 07:51PM

New callsign coming for me soon - I passed my test yesterday. VK2FRO.

Now have the Advanced license.

In other news, strong wind brought my "dodgy" dipole down, so I will replace it with a W728 diamond dipole that *should* fit in the space available.
Re: Amateur Radio
Hon1nbo, Sat Jun 13 2009, 02:26AM

I finally got my first HF rig at Ham-Com today! - a Kenwood TS-140S, operates all HF and is capable of most modes @ 100 Watts...
I plane to setup my first HF antenna next week, and I might even try listening with a non-transmitting grade antenna I have...

now I just need to offload the FT-950 MicroHam MicroKeyer radio cable for a Kenwood cable (when I got the keyer, that was the cable the seller had mistrust
Re: Amateur Radio
aonomus, Wed Jun 17 2009, 01:08PM

So first update on my trip, myself (VA3MOO) and my co-driver (VA3FRY) will be probably on a repeater that Dave said to speak on once we're a little south of the Canada/US border: 145.130- PL 186.2. We'll be monitoring as we head down so if you want, wait to hear our calls!

Re: Amateur Radio
aonomus, Fri Jun 19 2009, 12:10AM

Har har.

So while I wasn't able to pick up the repeater that Dave gave me, I was chatting a good portion of the way down on other repeaters that I found, so at least I made the most of it. I'll give it a try on the way back, but there was a ton of rain probably affecting it.

Paul Benham, Wed Jul 29 2009, 12:27PM

My callsign is G7PXT.

I've been licenced since the early 90's and I have one Yaesu 2M rig.

I have not been active for a long time. I am interested in HF so maybe one day I'll be on 6M or 10M.

Cheers,

Paul.
Re: Amateur Radio
aonomus, Fri Aug 14 2009, 05:28PM

From what I understand, 6m is the band where you pretty much have to sacrifice a goat in a pentagram with candles. That, or get really lucky with sporradic E. Rightnow we have 0 sunspots, so I don't think you'll get any long distance via 6m.

You could try IRLP though and make contacts that way too.
Re: Amateur Radio
Barry, Fri Aug 21 2009, 01:49PM

What is a generally accepted grounding wire size?

I'm putting a vertical on a short roof-mount tower, and for lightning protection I'm grounding the tower to an 8' copper post in the ground. It's about forty feet from tower to grounding post. What size wire should I use to connect the two? The guys at the local hardware store pointed at this little 12-awg bare copper wire but that looked like maybe a hundred-amp fuse to me. tongue

Folks, please use this thread only for introductions and operating status updates. Take radio related questions to a separate thread.

Aonomus, you ought to start a thread re: 6m. Its actually a very hot band right now.

Same for Barry. I'd be happy to help, in a different thread..

LutzH, Mon Nov 16 2009, 08:41PM

Hello:

I am N7SWA in Hawaii, and my equipment is a 100mw 10m transmitter in an Altoids can, with a nice Grundig SW receiver. Just kidding a little bit, I do have a 50watt Yaesu 2 meter mobile, and an old Radio Shack 10 meter rig which has been gathering dust waiting for the next sunspot cycle. It has been a while since I was very active, I loved the theory, but the code requirments really put me off to doing anything more advanced. I always looked at it like being required to master navigation with a sextant, before being allowed to view through a newtonian or a refractor. So instead of buying a better ham rig, I built a 16" f5.6 Newtonian and enjoyed the night this way. I think in a way some of the the stubborn old timers, and some of the anal new new folks in HAM radio killed the hobby in the US with their fixation on code. I think the code fixation went a long way towards making HAM radio seem "uncool" as another member put it. Why not require mastery of spark gap transmitters? Hey at least this way you learn how to build better tesla coils.

I know this has changed now, but the change came to late for me, with limited funding, and two kids other hobbies privailed. Who knows the bug may bite again some day, so I may dabble just to keep up.
Well we have enough HAM's now so that we can keep the forum on the air after 12/21/2012 :) Or did we cause that?

Been hamming most of my life though currently not so active. Spending most of my time coiling instead of QSOs.

Used to write occasionally for QST and others. Need to get my HF gear back up.
Re: Amateur Radio
vk2fro, Sat Jul 02 2011, 08:40PM

Well well well, I musta already had an account here - bugga me if I can remember the password (mods you can delete the vk2hro account - it is me!)

Had VK2HRO for about a year then upgraded to VK2FRO - the callsign has a cuss word when you dont use the correct phoenetics - if the saying is used in my circle of friends, i usually reply "thats my callsign, stop wearing it out".

Presently I have a sirio 2016 up for 10-15m (works 20 with a tuner), and a Yaesu FT897 borrowed from a friend. The sirio is up 11m bolted to the back wall of the property boundry. The neighbours behind me havent complained about it.

Had an icom 7k, but due to financial issues had to sell it. A friend got me back on the air with the 897 and am now steadily paying off a Yaesu FT 950 in amoungst building a laser projector and my capacitor bank.

My handheld is the little yaesu VX-3R 2.5 watt, a pocket (literally) sized rig that you can hide, unless your like me and have a 2 ft aftermarket antenna on it.

VHF at home is covered by a Diamond X510, on a mast bolted to the busted clothes line. The original "covers the sydney basin" antenna had to come down by order of the council.

The 2m side of the 897 runs through a 100 watt amplifier and then on to the vertical. The HF side runs to a 600 watt amplifier, then a talking wattmeter, through an antenna switch and out to the dipole / vertical.

I know it has been awhile since anyone posted in here so i thought I would post and see if we get any new takers, My call is WD9HXC, I have an extra class license and have been licensed since the late 70's been a VE for many years I am not super active on HF as I once was but I am pretty ative on 2 meters and also use echolink from time to time on my cell phone and on the computer. I have a couple of HF rigs one old Heathkit that works excellent and Yaseu FT920 that works extremely well.

NC0H - Missouri, USA - Extra Class

I've been involved with amateur radio (and electronics) all of my life in one form or another. I'm not very active on HF although I do hop on from time to time when propagation is good. You'll be more likely to hear me off of a high altitude ballon repeater, or UAV repeater. My core interest in radio is making use of it in projects and continuing my RF education more than the talking/community side of it. I prefer forums for that, but that's not to say I don't enjoy a challenging DX QSO.

Hello all,
Had my call sign ON9AWZ for a while but only recently got around to procuring an HF rig.

For the time being I am operating an ICOM 718 HF all mode transceiver through a v-dipole on my apartment terrace. I mainly operate on SSB on the 20 and 40 meter bands (given my antenna size limitations). Will get up and running at some point with PSK31 and CW (on the 30 m band as well).
Re: Amateur Radio
Conundrum, Sun Jul 28 2013, 10:37AM

Hi all.
Not licensed yet, but am in the process of building a light rig.
Seems that this approach can yield much longer distance QSOs than anything homebuilt, with cheap (£20) components.

Re: Amateur Radio
Aard-Wolf, Fri Mar 21 2014, 11:01PM

Hi all.

Noticed that there hadn't been any activity in this section for a while so I though I would say hello!

I love Morse Code (I listen to CW driving to and from work each day), and can normally be found shortwave listening around 80m, 40m, 30 & 20m in the CW portions.

I also collect Morse keys and Morse related items. I used to buy any and all keys, but these days I tend to just hang out for the more 'interesting' ones, maybe one-off copies or perhaps one-off hand made keys. I prefer straight keys normally, but I do have a few paddle keys and keyers lurking about the place.

When I do transmit I really enjoy QRP working, and I normally run about three watts or so into a trap loaded halo antenna. I prefer to use 'stealth' antennas, either in the attic space, or else low down outside (only a few feet above the ground).

I'm a member of the G-QRP Club in the UK, and the SKCC based in the US.

73 for now... smile

Just because, this is incredibly handy because adding small controlled amounts of noise to a system is a good way to gauge its immunity to interference.

Edit: Finally got my SDR to work!

Seems that many of the cheaper units lack the RFI filters found on expensive ones, these can be added with a minor track mod and an inline filter soldered in place.
Also adding 0.1uF capacitors post filter to Gnd, extra cooling and other features such as fine tuning of clock xtal via varicap diode.

In my experience USB powered SDRs are full of noise. I found it best to put the whole receiver and a battery to power it inside a shielded metal box so I could see how many of the spurious emissions and endless spikes were creeping in from the USB supply..
