Solid state Microwave oven transformers
HazzWold 1993, Fri Mar 12 2010, 09:19AMHey all!, just picked up a few inverter style microwaves. and stripped them apart. and i was just wondering, if anyones got much experiance with these.
Is the board these ferrite cored MOT's on. worth keeping as it, or should i just salvage all the components off it.

I recall hearing that trying to use this for powering something or drawing an arc, will just kill it.

I think they can be used, but recalling a previous thread from here, I think you need some signals to get the things to fire up. After that, I think they also have 2 modes, a high and a low mode.
I think I also remember hearing that they heat up quite quickly, but I think it did work for drawing arcs.
Hopefully someone here can help some more

That looks like a Panasonic inverter. There is a handy nicely illustrated pdf on how to use them for other purposes, here:

i have one of these pcbs here which is DOA, not sure why.
took the transformer off and there is some damage but may be repairable.

I've had a few. Only got one up and running; just for a single session then it was gone. That's most likely why you wind up getting them (obviously) - but when I stripped it I was looking up the parts and found that some items are quite expensive if bought via Mouser or other retailer. Unquestionably worth having and keeping regardless of functionality. A great source.

I have used one of these supplies (not exact, but very similar) to successfully power a tesla coil, though not continuously. The power supply would draw over 1500W from the wall during heavy operation, but did heat up very quickly. If an appropriate fan were implemented, you may be able to keep it cool enough. Think about a microwave - it has to be able to run continuously at a high power. My unit did occasionally latch off in a fault condition, but if I simply reset the signal to the control (disconnect and reapply the battery attached), the supply started right back up.
