Bots on Wiki

Bots posting spam on the wiki is getting to be a real hassle. Does anyone have any ideas?

I reckon that just making the login/signup process subtly but significantly different from the other wikis on the web would thwart most of the automated spamming. Something like the type-the-number-in-the-box thing on this forum, or even just something like, "you must check this box but not this other box to sign up".

The volume of spam is not too bad but it requires that someone revert it every day. If 7 people did it once a week then it would be no problem. The problem arises when it is not done in a few days and people start to edit the articles with spam in them and it all gets messy,

Banning the bot does not really help, a new username is made the next time anyway. It probably is better to keep it so it is easy to recognise the name.

Since people have to register anyway it may be just as well to restrict the editing to members of the forum, that should fix all problems.
