EU migratory junkbox

Dalus, Sun Jun 07 2009, 12:26PM

The EU migratory junkbox is a fact and under way from to me. We didn't want to wait for the USA box so we'll start our own one.

You might want to read this when your not familiar with the concept Link2

In short it's a traveling junkbox so you can give away stuff that you don't need and take what you need from the box.

Anyone from the EU can participate. Just send me a PM with your address and name. A 4HV member is allowed to invite a non 4hv member to participate. Though if the box gets lost you need to replace it so please only sent it to people you fully trust. Don't forget to make clear that the people that get invited need to register and post in the tracking thread too.

However there are some rules:

1) The box will have a 10 kg weight limit in order to keep the shipping costs down. Also be sure that you can afford to ship the box to the next person. Shipping costs vary a lot true the whole EU so be prepared to spend some money on this.

2) Nothing hazardous that could be a problem. Please use common sense and judge for yourself what might form a problem.

3) Take and add what you want, but try to add something of equivalent or greater value compared to what you took.

4) Whoever gets the box must sign the log book, take the junk they want, add the junk they don't, update the inventory, mail the box to the next person, and make a post in the tracking thread about it.

5) The box should be passed on as soon as possible. Please don't sit on it for a week before sending it to the next person. A maximum of 3 days is ok.

6) I will accept the names of everyone who wants to participate, and send each person a private message with the address of the person who is next in line to receive the box. That way we don't need to worry about keeping information in the box updated if anyone changes their mind. Check your private messages before sending the box along, just in case anything has changed.

7) If the box is in bad shape, please replace it. We don't want to have it fall apart in transit.

This thread is here to discuss the everything. If there's anything you'd like to know or want to discuss the rules here's the place.

I'll start a new thread for the tracking of the box when some members want to participate.

Re: EU migratory junkbox
Dalus, Sun Jun 07 2009, 02:15PM

Well this will depend on what all the postal companies allow and what not. My guess is better not do this since I fear they all need to be taken out of the box at some point since they are not allowed in some countries to be sent via mail.

I'd say no, just in case.

will send tomorrow, just going through my "collection of random bits" to send..

Great I also have a lot of parts to unload wink
Re: EU migratory junkbox
Conundrum, Sun Jun 07 2009, 08:32PM

EDIT:- Box "Photonique" is on its way :)

I had an issue with shipping, seems that the 120 grams over 2kg added £7 to the shipping cost (!!!!) so i have removed the heavy parts such as that capacitor, amended the log book and sent them separately in a jiffy bag.

if the jiffy bag arrives around the same time as the box, feel free to include these parts if you don't need them.

here's the current contents including the jiffy bag...

also took a few pictures :)

Updated the main post with the participants so far. Should be fun to see how this works out with all the extra people getting introduced by 4hv members :) But remember they need to stick to the rules and post here too.
Re: EU migratory junkbox
brtaman, Sun Jun 21 2009, 01:25PM

I would like to participate if it is possible? I have close to a hundred 4kv (0.0068-0.01 uF) PETP caps coming my way most of which I will not be needing...would this interest anyone? I bought them for a TC only to find out that they are useless...they will work great in a CW though. I think I can find more stuff though if the caps are useless to everyone
Re: EU migratory junkbox
Dalus, Sun Jun 21 2009, 07:12PM

You can join if you live in the EU. Just send me a PM and I'll make sure you'll receive the box too.

btw I received the box though haven't had time to add any stuff or take anything out. Failed my final exams but still have a chance to make it with a re-exam on Wednesday so all my time is being put into that last important exam.

I'll make a new tracking thread when I have time and taken pics of the box.
Re: EU migratory junkbox
Proud Mary, Mon Jun 22 2009, 01:17AM

Hi Dalus, I live in the EU, and am always willing to help other members of our virtual club, but am not very keen on posting large parcels of unwanted material around the EC!

However, I do have large stocks of all sorts of parts, so anyone from the EC who is a regular member in good standing need not be afraid to ask me to have a look through my shed, and see if I can help them with a part or two.

PS I keep only a small amount of silicon.... but am well stocked with thermionic valve level parts.

So just ask, and I'll probably let you have something if I have it for a small contribution to 4HV.org. smile
Re: EU migratory junkbox
Dalus, Mon Jun 22 2009, 10:29AM

Hey thanks Harry, think quite a few members would appreciate it.

Though it would be more fun when you could join the junkbox. Think it will also be possible to send you a few parts from the box when it has gone full circle and is back at Conundrum. That way you can also choose some goodies you'd want.

Hope the box will attract some more members from the EU smile
Re: EU migratory junkbox
Proud Mary, Mon Jun 22 2009, 01:01PM

Thanks Dalus, the kind of thing I tend to have spare are silver mica radio frequency capacitors, even a few medium power HF tetrodes, variable capacitors, strange thermionic valves, GM tubes, and so on.

It's not an open invitation to carry away all my goodies, but for someone who is desperate, or has, like me, not much money, I am always more than happy to help established, regular members of 4HV.org.

I didn't want to seem unfriendly to other EU/Norwegian/Russian members, Dalus, which is why I am making this offer to bona fida 4HVers - it's just that I'm an old bloke and I don't want to be going up and down the road with heavy boxes to the Post Office.,

Best Wishes,

Harry

Yes, I did understand from your previous post. I'll add the information to the startpost and tracking thread including the information for what kind of members it's intended.

I'll be sure to let you know when the box is back at Conundrum, you should get something in return for what you give.

I forgot to add that I have quite a lot of unused germanium transistors, which would make for nice small packets. smile

Seing the hand written inventory list, I thought it might be an idea to write it in excel, and post it here every time it is passed on to the next receiver.

Just an idea.

SA007, Sun Jul 26 2009, 08:29PM

Junkbox arrived here last week, but I was too busy to do anything with it.

But now I've got time, here the list of what I've taken out of the box and what I've put in.

Out:
Thumb P1010026
- Variac
- Vaisala GPS thing
- Some small mirros
- Temperature sensor
- Bluetooth headset guts
- 2 pieces (about 1/4) of the silicone
- A 230V relais
- TI wlan card

In:
Thumb P1010031
- An lcd panel meter (top left, completely black on the picture)
- 5x 0.2W solar panel (bottom left)
- 2x strong unipolar stepper motor (top center)
- VU-meter VFD display (top right)
- 15x 3.6V lithium battery (center)
- 15x LDR (bottom center)
- Laser scanner out of laser printer (right center)
- 2x HALL effect sensor (bottom right)
- Piece of veroboard (bottom right)

I'm going to pack it now, should be able to post it tomorrow to KingOfDos.
Re: EU migratory junkbox
rp181, Mon Jul 27 2009, 11:59AM

You probably shouldn't include batteries, could cause problems with shipping.
Re: EU migratory junkbox
SA007, Mon Jul 27 2009, 03:17PM

Don't really see why battery's are a problem.
Almost every piece of electronics has a battery inside, and most are a lot more powerful and dangerous than simple lithium battery's.
Its not Li-ion or lipo or anything.

Package has been shipped to KingOfDos.
Re: EU migratory junkbox
Conundrum, Wed Jul 29 2009, 08:37PM

hmm... yeah, fwiw i have three more of those headsets

i did also find a whole pile of dead/untested DVD writers so if anyone has a use PM me.

Re: EU migratory junkbox
KingOfDos, Fri Jul 31 2009, 11:29PM

I've received the package from SA007 a few days ago, just to busy for an upcoming event (want to complete some projects).

I'd taken the two servo's SA007 added, for my home-buld tank-kind-a-thingy, hope that they have enouch N (after adding some gears). Taken the lens for another project, and one Apple Modem (in the hope that I can wire them on a uC).
Added: A couple of PSU PCB's (taken from some prototype wireless transmitters, the links betwean GSM/HSDPA masts, and/or there uplinks). 1 FM transmitter (about 20m range indoor). 2 FPGA developer boards (untested! got them for free). 2 little cooling blocks (alu). 1 CD (guess rw?) laser+lens+etc. 1 mini tape cassette (from a answer machine?).

I'll try to send out the package to Sprite_tm tomorrow when i'd wake up (and if the postal service is open). Otherwise the package will be sent on monday. I'll take some images of the stuff before doing. :)
rp181 wrote ...

If I've got time i'll secure them (for short circuit) tomorrow, just a little tape on the + wire will do "just in case". Was already started to wrap some PCB's in paper, so they won't be damaged.

Sprite_tm, Thu Aug 06 2009, 09:17PM

And the box has arrived at my place. Just unpacked it and shot some pics, I'm still contemplating what to take out and what to put back in...
Re: EU migratory junkbox
SA007, Thu Aug 06 2009, 10:28PM

I did have a battery short on one of the battery's here, basilcy nothing happened, only the outer plastic broke but nothing spectacular like smoke of flames.

brtaman, Fri Aug 28 2009, 08:16PM

What's going on with the box? It has been over three weeks. sprite must be quite bussy or on vacation?
Re: EU migratory junkbox
Sprite_tm, Mon Aug 31 2009, 07:30PM

A bit of both. I already have opened the box, gotten out what I want and put in some goodies you people can use, but with HAR2009 and after that some personal stuff going on I just haven't come around to sending the box. Wednesday is my day off, I'll try to post pictures and mail the box then. Sorry for my tardiness...

Pump diodes are always of use. :)

However, if you have an entire bag may I suggest the markets of laserpointerforums and photonlexicon, with a good price they would get snatched up immediately.

The box, mostly unpacked. Holy crap, there are quite a lot of goodies inthere!

Img 3517
The remaining stuff.

This is what I took out.

And here's what I put back:
Img 3520
Leds, anyone? These modules all have very bright flux-leds in them, in an 8x8 matrix. Most of the modules have one or two dead leds, though. Use them for the leds or to make your own dotmatrix-display, you decide.

Img 3521
And these thingies are small modules to power e.g. a white led from a low-voltage source, e.g. a single AA.

I'm still quite busy until next week :/ I hope to be able to send it that wednesday.

Re: EU migratory junkbox

If Kizmo gets this box going I want to make sure things like this never happen again. I'd Like to get the box back to me and host it from here in a similar way as done with the USA one. This is much safer and cheaper.

Kizmo said that he didn't have the money to send the box to here. Are there people willing to contribute to getting this box moving again?

If you don't like the idea of a virtual box please tell me.

Think you have the UK/EU one. If I recall correctly I've sent you a pm for the next person in the list. An alternative option is to use the USA system where all junk is stored centrally so we save on postage. Just tell me what you think is best
