4hv 'book of records'

Avalanche, Fri Mar 17 2006, 02:51PM

I had this idea a few days ago, but decided not to bother posting it. But I thought it would be an interesting idea to consider:

How about a 4hv members records section? For example, largest DRSSTC, largest SGTC, most efficient coil, highest output from a flyback, smallest coil, that sort of thing - and have it documented in a thread or page with a single picture and a short description and maybe a link to a webpage, much like the Guinness book of records. I've noticed there's a bit of friendly competition with things like this, and thought it would be cool to have it all recorded in one place.

What do you think?

I think its a great idea, gives all the newcomers something to awe at. Too bad I haven't got any ground breaking records though...

Sounds like a great idea, Avalanche. It could even start off as just a thread, or if each thing is a finished work of art (as most DRSSTCs are, cased or not), perhaps submissions might go to the project board. That way all submissions are immortalized, and the best few from each category eternalized in a hall of fame.

I'd be happy to help with the design and hosting of the showcasing website.

Just so long as the competition remains 'friendly', and mattrg doesn't start a fat argument on the definition of a tesla coil, hehe ^^

I'll start with the soon-to-be-documented most heavily abused flyback =)

I like the idea, but who is going to decide what the categories are? Without set categories, someone could put up the "most efficient sgtc" but then someone else might just post "most efficient sgtc with NST" and then someone else could put up "most efficient sgtc with de-potted NST" and we'd end up with every coil and flyback on the records thread anyway.

Somehow I don't think that'll be a problem. Even with 'de-potted'/NST arguments, you won't have every single coil in the competition.

If by "friendly" competition, I don't mind hosting the best few from each category, then there won't be anybody thumbing their noses at anyone else.

Hell, you wouldn't necessarily need to make it so strict by categorisation. Initially I wouldn't mind a free-for-all where people just pimp the best of their work, and it all goes up for display.

e.g. one DRSSTC might make awesomely thick arcs, and another might have a sexy fabricated acrylic base, machined primary former, and a whole lot of effort going into the controls and appearance. Both deserve display.

Is further argument necessary? I hope not.

Avalanche, I'll start work on a webpage for you tonight.

Brilliant, thanks blackplasma! Glad to see people think it's a good idea too.

As for categories, I agree a 'free for all' approach would be good to start it off, so basically if you have some thing that you 'think would take some beating' then a category can be created for it.

I think all members here are trustworthy enough to not try and get in the records by submitting things with small details changed, so hopefully it will remain fairly tidy. As a general rule of thumb, stick to the top 1 or 2 levels only - for example, 'Tesla coil > spark gap > greatest efficiency', or 'Flyback > Longest Arc obtained'.

Seems good idea, lots of impressive stuff get lost in hundreds of posts..

I also think there will be not too much problems, so I agree with you smile

i think it would be a great idea, seeing as i will have the best beginner SSTC :P i wish, but u never know maybe i will...

I think this is a good idea. I think that i set a record as the youngest person to ever build a tesla coil as big as mine and as nice as mine.

how would you know you built the best coil for a young person, there are people that probably built better ones than your but didnt decide to put it on the net. here is a better title; youngest person to build the nicest and biggest coil in the 4hv.com community

Why not just host a wiki page, or perhaps have it as a subsection of a page about 4hv itself?

Youngest person to build a VTTC for me? (if I get it working before I turn 15...)

Did i say that i know or i think? i built the nicest and biggest tesla coil for a kid my age. And seeing tha there are only approximately 5000 tesla coilers worldwide than in perportion the would be around 50 coilers that are my age and younger and seeing that every tc i see on youtube or websites or here on 4hv that was built by a young person is not as nice as mine. *trying not to brag just stating a point*

wtf only 5000 people out of 6 billion build coil, thats sucks

Arcstarter is 15 and I am 15 tomorrow.
I also made a nice ZVS flyback driver.

Does that make up for it? tongue
(by the way, I don't have enough money for a 833C tube and socket)

lol that zvs is quite impressive now just, make a compact pcb and it will b very compact. i also zee you have a big heat sink are you planning on running it of 48 volts because you dont need a heatsink that big for such an effiecien driver, and i suggest if you are going to run it of 48v you use like 13.8 volts for the control cuircutry as this wil save your zeners and other components. if you choose to build it on pcb i have a hint for you. your high current trachs will be better off if you get some 10 lighting single stand wire and solder it to the pcb tracks. but i have to say againg that driver look very clean wink

Thanks. smile
Never have made a PCB before and also I think it's fine for compactness. What's wrong with a big heat sink? The heat sink is big enough for the caps to rest on so they don't just dangle around. Also the ZVS flyback driver I built is meant for two supplies. 12V for the controll circuitry and 12-40 or so volts for the flyback. Today I made a MMC for the tank capacitor because at ~300W input, the caps would get kinda warm... The tank caps is now made of 8 1uF caps arranged so that it totals .5uF.

Kinda straying off topic aren't we? (oh noes, I can't say that I am 14 anymore in less than an hour)

Wasn't the smallest VTTC made by Shawn LG? Who got the record for the largest spark length to secondary coil ratio? IIRC was around 3.5:1.

My quote wasn't targeted enough for absolute clarity I guess. It's impossible to not sound like you're bragging when you both claim your own work is great and mock other's.
