dvd-rom CD player with a tube based amp!

I acquired a few 6080 tubes in a trade, so I decided to make an amp out of them. I have been talking with the folks on the diyaudio forum and have decided to go with a parafeed setup with a IXCP10x45s constant current source, so I could use some normal mains transformers as the output transformers. Then I was hoping to get away with some car speakers to make the actual noise, and am mainly trying to iron out the details for the preamp to drive the 8060s at this point. The decision to use parafeed/car speakers was to minimise costs (trying to spend <$50 to build the amp)

BUT just building a tube amp was not enough for me, so I decided it needed a sleek cd player to drive them (especially because the only audio source in my room is integrated line out from my desktop dead ). So I ripped a apart a dvd-rom(keep reading) drive to get the drive out, and it works as an exposed cd player, perfect for what I want. The only complaint I have with it is that the rubber pad the cd sits on it not sticky enough to turn the cd, and I have to use the magnet that goes on top of the drive to keep it on... The drive works fine as a standalone cd player, and the internal dac actually sounds pretty good; it is better than my current stereo!

But the 76 minutes a cd can handle is nothing these days, I was thinking of putting a little mini-mobo and using the dc rom drive to its fullest potential-4.7gb of songs compressed lossless or mp3 (whatever I have them stored as)... And having a mobo I could have the thing on the network and put files/control it remotely [evile grin]... But that would bring the cost from the original goal of $50 to around 200ish after it is all put together... I don't know yet, I might build it simple for now then add a computer later... See the computers section for more discussion on this aspect...

Last night I started the CD player, so I guess it is finally project thread worthy...
Here it is:

I think the blue electrical tape holding it together it what makes it sound so good cheesey

you could always buy a cd player from the local thrift shop. the spindles for the cds always have a catcher of sorts and most come off with enough trying.
this would save you from having to put the magnet catch on it. wink
