recycle bin...

I am running windows, and am having issues with the recycle bin. I want it to not show up on the desktop, but I still want it to be in explorer... Is that too much to ask?

I started out by removing the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel\ {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
string, which removed it from the desktop (yay!), and was running for a few months but then there was a solid gigabyte of unacounted files on my hard disk that was giving me problems (I have my laptop hdd set up as 2 partitions a 10gb windows and a 50bg one for other files, the 10gb windows was down to a mere 1.5gb and windows was starting to complain)... So then I realised it was the recycle bin, so I tried to see the files (and delete them) by going to c:\recycler (that is where the disk utilisation software showed the data) and was met with a blank screen (yes I do have the show hidden files option enabled in the view menu)... I tired navigating there in a ms-dos prompt, but when I typed dir it said
volume in drive C has no label
volume serial number is bobf-6532
directory of c:\recycler
file not found
so no luck there... So I put the key back in the registry and the recycle bin showed up again (complete with data) in both explorer and the desktop. I emptied it, and then I exported the key agian...

So is there a way to either navigate directly to the folder where the files are stored or have the recycle bin show up in explorer without it being on the desktop? I would just get rid of it all together, set the file utilization all of the way down, and forget about it; but having that extra buffer has saved my ass more than once dead

Any ideas?

Have a blank large icon in an .ico file.
Name the bin "."...
Load your skin with this icon in the desktop settings.

There must be a TweakUI for XP...
::)

arrg, why couldn't windows just us pick ALL the icons on the desktop, we can pick all of the my computer/network paces/etc, but not the recycle bin. I even tried tweakui and I couldn't get them to separate mad

this is perfect. time to whip out my favorite program

windowblinds from stardock

this program is used to pick up one or more icons from your desktop and skin your windows, start button panel, and toolbars.

its awesome. you can go to wincustomize.com for free skins at any time.

Files in the recyle bin are stored in an overcomplicated if you ask me. So here is a way of making the recycle bin show up in "My Computer"

Create a new registry key in called:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\Namespace\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}

Now you can empty the recycle bin from "My Computer"

Edit: Another way is to create a new folder anywhere you like and name it:
Recycle Bin.{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}

I couldn't find the place in the registry you were referring to, so I tried the folder thing and it worked :)

Thanks!

The registry path ("place") does not exist by default. Create it and the recycle bin will appear in "My Computer".

I couldn't even find to the MyComputer, so I decided that rather than risk fixoring my registry I would just use the file method...
