project "long Sparks"
Linas, Thu Jan 24 2008, 09:14AM
Hi all
I started to build Full-bridge Pll AM SSTC
First make PCB
Thet Put all parts together
Next week, i make full-bridge circuit, and then sparks :)
PLL driver not working, i use 74HC4046 PLL, is it same as CD4046 ?

Very nice and clean board design, looks good.

Very nice board indeed. You didn't happen to feed 12V to the 74HC4046 did you? 74HC chips are for 5V max.
Re: project "long Sparks"
Steve Conner, Thu Jan 24 2008, 10:38AM
The difference is that a 74HC4046 can only run off 5V supply. 15V will kill it.

The 74HC4046 chip should be used if the resonant frequency is much higher than 2 MHz. Otherwise a normal CD4046 should be just fine.

everything works good, pll was bad
I add wave forms with and without load (load is 100nF F 300KHz )

How to protect CD4046 from static energy ? i kill 3 CD4046, just 74HC4046 is working, but not very well :(

Don't rub your wool socks on the carpet. Seriously, I can't recall having a single ESD death in the last 3 years, are you sure that's the problem? Use a grounded wrist-strap and sit in one place while working with sensitive chips, that should eliminate most problems with static.

That is a very clean board etch!
How did you create it? I've never had any real luck with etching pc boards.
I can't wait to see this project fully completed!

74HC4046 is very sensitive, current transformer can "feel" my hand
I am thinking about interrupter with overcurrent protection, is it nesesere in SSTC ?
Because i very frequently kill mosfet's
Using this driver with my tesla coil secundary and primary connected to this bord, it's generate ~2cm spark, so with 311V will be 25 greiter
Re: project "long Sparks"
EDY19, Sat Jan 26 2008, 06:10PM
My SSTC was drawing 2100W from the 115V receptacle in CW, and the mosfets never got past warm. I used 40N30 mosfets, but my drive to the gates was good, and it was a self tuning 74HC14 driver which makes for better switching transitions then a closed loop design. I did have an interrupter though, and I think that is a must for SSTCs- its a lot of fun to play around with the settings, and to be able to control it remotely varying the pulse width, off time... Looks nice though, keep it up!!

25 times greater, the relation isn't linear

But if i have with half-bridge 35cm sparks, so with full-bridge i get more than 50cm :)
and other question, GDT should be close as it's possible near mosfets???
and what is the best winding of GDT, becase i all te time winding like this

overcurrent protection:
Here i find overcurrent protection circuit, is good for me ? Because it was using in DRSSTC wich pulsed is 300A, and mine mosfets are 20A...(i whant, that mine coil don't run more than 2000W )
Re: project "long Sparks"

for sure its possible to use this circuit to sense 20A or so. you have to change the resistor value R5 to something around 100ohms or so.
but i dont recommend this circuit cause ive had some weird problems with it. so if you use a normal ne555 and you test the overcurrent protection circuit the irf630 stays on all the time after the overcurrent tripped. with a tlc555 it works like it should.
this circuit is exactly what steve ward used in his drsstc guide.
i simulated it and had similar problems in simulation. you should add a 100nF capacitor in the track between pin 7 of lm311 and pin 2 of ne 555. a 1 k resistor from pin2 of ne 555 to +15V. add a 47ohms resistor on gate of irf630 mosfet if you use a tlc555, otherwise the overcurrent led stays off all the time.
sorry, but its a crap circuit and ive had many problems, with it. with this changes it works, but its far away from "exact" ...
you should read some ti application notes. there are many papers out there with good overcurrent circuits for smps use.
im developing a overcurrent circuit at the moment which rectifies the ct output via a precision rectifier circuit etc. so it should be very accurate. we´ll see.

NE555 i can change to TS555, and R5 to regulating 500 om rezistor..
and what about GTD driver ? does mine windig is good? or can be beter ?
and IRF630 i thinking to change to BS170

I make some changes in sstc full-bridge, there isn't mistakes??
Re:

tomorrow i will get heat sink, and power supply toroid
and other great news, i start to put all pcb into the box
and can someone show SMPS overcurrent protection, without current transformers, maybe 0,01om resistor
Re:

Linas, Sat Feb 09 2008, 07:48PM
i have all parts, going to use 30A mosfet's,
Re: project "long Sparks"
uzzors2k, Sat Feb 09 2008, 08:29PM
Looks nice. Over-current protection on a bridge using a resistor is problematic because the current is AC. A transformer is the logical way to go.
Re:

Linas, Thu Feb 14 2008, 07:34AM
I start make GDT design, add 6nF mosfet gate waveform
F is 300KHz
6nF 300KHz 6V squere
I find GDT with Leakage inductance max 0,3μH
It means good ?
Re: project "long Sparks"
uzzors2k, Thu Feb 14 2008, 01:01PM
It's good. You an tell by the waveform, if there's very little overshoot and ringing the GDT is perfect.
Re:

Linas, Sun Feb 17 2008, 12:18PM
I am trying make best GDT, so i buy different cores for GDT,
What do you thinking about this type of core ?
Re: project "long Sparks"
Tom540, Sun Feb 17 2008, 07:45PM
One way to find out. Try it, but I dont think the waveforms will be very clean.
Re:

Over current protection complete
set to 10A or 2200W
555 changed to UCC37322, so i can use one more protection, maybe over temp :) put signal tu enable pin :) (for my driver, need to use -5 to turn off coil, not +5 )
Re: project "long Sparks"
Linas, Fri Feb 22 2008, 09:05PM
Hey, first spark :)
But just to ground, then put DRSSTC interrupter PACH

Question regarding overcurrent protection, the primary wire is going to only pass through core's hole? Or are you going to wind?
Re:

Linas, Sat Feb 23 2008, 07:11AM
no, i don't use over current protection for this test,

SSTC is working :) ( a little bit )
Made double 555 interrupter

first light, using 74HC14 driver antenna feedback, spark size is 45cm,
