Less emoticons

Alex, Fri Feb 10 2006, 08:59PM

I noticed a problem when I was making a post a little why ago... There are so many emoticons, some things that aren't emoticons are being interpereted as them, for example: A) not this, B) this, C) not this.

Emoticons worth keeping:
:@
!lol
!dodge
:(
ill
:)
:O
:p
;)

If you ask me, they're all pretty lame, but some of them are repeated, and there are some that aren't going to be used at all. For instance, the alien. Wtf? Oh yes, I get it. How alien of me. Er, wait. No.

I've thinned it out a great deal. I didn't look at your post beforehand, but I think you'll be pleased with the results. I also got rid of most of the alternates, so as to minimize the creation of accidental smilies.

Ahh, that's better.

Why not just get rid of all emoticons, this is a pretty childish thing altogether. If you really need to smile, you can do it in plain text just as well. Or at least have an option not to display smileys.

I noticed that the Ohm, Integral and other "scientific smileys" that we had on the old board are not here, are they coming back?

I believe Dave Billington is working on the scientific symbol set. When he's done, they will be made available.

I am still seing 2 duplicates. I for one like to use emoticons occasionaly, some might not. And I must say this site has the least and most plain emoticons I have seen. I might occasionaly have to use my own emoticons. Like when I forget something Shrugs and then I really feel like a dumb _ss Dumb hmm why does that happen so often to me? lol

Emoticons are all very well and good... but can't someone (may I?) resize them so they fit inline with text, rather than interfering with the line above.

The old 4hv emoticons were perfect - they were appropriate, and the same height in pixels as the default font-size, meaning they didn't interfere with the paragraphs they were in.

cheers =)

Those jerky animated emoticons are really annoying when trying to read some other part of the thread.

I don't like the cheesy grin icon and the laughing one is getting to be irritating. The wink one is terrible. The others I don't mind.

I agree with BP that smaller would be better.

There still seem to be a few doubles and the smug-looking smile one (the ninth from the left) turns out to be a big grin.

I think what would help this problem is not resizing the emoticons but the text. It seems the text size is very small, and viewing it on a 19" at 1600x1200 is downright difficult. It is much smaller than most other forums I belong to. dead
