"Read" buttons not working properly

Part Scavenger, Tue Mar 07 2006, 05:28PM

Why is it that most of the threads are marked as "read" (i.e. no green light) even though I have not even opened them? I have been very careful not to click the mark all as read button, and this still happens on all boards. I've not been on the EMP or the Comp Science board in two weeks and it thinks they are all read. It happens while I am online just viewing and while I'm gone. It also doesn't mark as read the threads I post in until I go back and "read" them. Am I just doing something wrong? I wanted to figure out some pattern so that I could help solve the problem, but I can't find any that it seems to follow.

There are some problems with the system, it may also possibly behave differently on different browsers. Sometimes the "lights" gets cached by the browser and will not display the true state. Other times the state seems to change for no clear reason.

I have yet to find out if there is a system to it.

It looks like you just have to read your own posts (to make sure you didn't make a typo-right?). As to them being marked read automatically, it is becoming relatively popular for forums to only show posts as new for a day or two, not sure why though mistrust

I think we just have to live with it...

I just noticed something about the read buttons. If you go to the "board", it will clean them all (mark read) even if you don't read them all. Also, for me, the green light will never come back on unless there is a new posting which makes sense.

I've noticed the new post lights are somewhat borked too. I've no idea what causes it. The only thing I figured out is that if you use the Back button in your browser after reading a thread, the green light for that thread will still be on because the browser is showing the cached page.

For a while, I'm sure the lights were green in Firefox and red in Opera suprised

holding ctrl + f5 seems to fix the problem of the lights getting cached... (in IE atleast)

I have not had the problem of all of the threads getting read by visiting the board, but they do get marked as read after 24hrs regardless of if you read them or not...

I too am having this problem, but not just with the read indicator icons. The post "Report" "Quote" and "Edit" icons also disapear. They show initially upon page load but as soon as the javascript clock in the upper left refreshes a single time they become hidden.

It seems like many threads become marked as read when I log in from an other location than I usually do.

I use different computers around the campus all the time and I get this problem a lot.

My problem is a little different; regularly, looking at the same topics, in the same session, on the same computer, they will magically become "unread" again after I browse away and back.

I can understand my own posts appearing as 'unread' with a green light if I haven't looked at the message... but after reading, coming back, they change status again? Strange...

Seems worse than I previously thought. Earlier today I posted a reply to a thread, I did not go back to the thread afterwards. Checked back in the subforum later, thread marked as read as it should be. When I went back to the subforum just now the thread was marked as unread, even though there were no newer replys than the one I posted earlier.

Seems random to me.

Something very strange has been happening today. Previously read threads have been marked as having unread replies, even though I have read the last reply in them (they were marked as read after I had read them, then became marked as unread some time later without any new posts in them). The cases I mentioned in my last reply were only with my own posts.

The reason why I am posting this is that it has happened a lot today, around 10 times I think. Do anyone know what's going on?

Also, is it in any practical way possible to make threads marked as having unread replies stay marked for more than 24 hours? This "feature" can be very annoying when I've been away from a computer for more than a couple of days.

Yeah, the indicator lights are messed up.

They seem to change randomly when you keep pressing the 'forum' link on the left hand side, alternating between an old (cached?) version of the site, and the actual real page.

I notice that threads that I have never looked at (or even the whole computer science board) are marked as 'read'. I haven't seen a real pattern, but my best guess is that after a day or two it is marked as 'read'

I use firefox and XP, if it helps... Any information as to a pattern/cause? It seems like a bug vs feature thing.
