Really small EMP

I'm really a noob, but I was redirected to this site, because you guys apparently are geniuses.
I got a project for school, in which we launch a cola can with a parachute and satelite inside.
We have to fill the can with another creation of our own, like a GPS-device.
The most original satelite wins.
In each rocket 2 satelites are launched.
My idea was to build a small EMP to shutdown the opponent.
I don't really know if this is possible, how to do it and if it will be effective.
We'll probably need a range of just a few meters, but preferebaly more.

I am not sure how much the other CanSat people will like if when you fry their projects...

I also wouldn't expect your project to come back down safely, since the EMP has a decent chance of taking down the electronics that control the charges in the booster rocket... And I know the person who built the rocket is going to be pissed.

But if all you need to do is kill the adjacent can, it just might be possible. Your best bet would be a small marx generator, powered by an inverter for a cold cathode light. You would need fast diodes good for the voltage (2 serised uf4007s would probably work), a number of small ceramic caps, and of course the transformer.

Is it just me, or is this kind of against the spirit of the CanSat competition?

i really don't know
the objective was to build something really original and to win
this covers both
and it sounds really cool

I say instead of EMP, make a untided down lifter, it would give you more lift.

i think you should put a smoke bomb (potassium nitrate and sugar melted together). I think an EMP would make you hated =)

You should put a 49mhz CW beacon satelite inside the can and try to recieve the beacon with a direct conversion receiver during it's descent to earth.

like i said, i'm really noob so i dont understand half of your comments
and u have to build something, you cant just buy a cool gadget and plug it in

An EMP generator is not a realistic goal, it requires time, money and lots of testing to make sure it will not be a total waste. You can have a look in the old archives but after a while you will come to the conclusion that it is not worth the effort.
