Can someone recomend a good small sstc that doesnt require expensive energy storage capacitors?

Ive built about 5 tesla coils in the past and i can understand circuit theory pretty well (im going to college to be an electrical engineer at hopefully rpi). I was wondering if there was an sstc that is bigger than steve wards micro coil that works well that i could audio modulate potentially. I know how to set up a circuit for audio modulation so there would not need to be a diagram on that specifically but if anybody knows something that wont cost me 300 bucks and works well, i would appreciate some help. thanks.

I would lean towards a PLL circuit, personally- check out steve conners design for a pretty simple one.

You cannot make an audiomodulated coil without filter capacitors (there will be a 60hz buz that overpowers the audio), however you can eliminate them from most non dual resonant designs if you don't mind the 60hz buz.

On the other hand, the caps can be had for very cheap, often less than $5 for a 100J cap if you find then surplus (ebay).

Also, many smallish audio modulated Teslas don't use full line voltage- finding >2000uf capacitors in a lower voltage range is not a difficult task, and for higher voltage designs, even putting several camera flash or SMPS capacitors in parallel can provide adequate filtering.
