Square Primary

Hey guys,

Today I was really bored at work and thinking of a better/faster way to make my coils. The part I hate the most is winding the primary. It takes too long to make a bunch of supports and drill a ton of holes and i really don't have the tools I need to do it. So today I made a new frame for a small coil and made notches directly in the supports with my table saw and wound the coil right around it. The wire is solid 10 awg stripped.

I haven't had a chance to test it yet but I'm wondering if anyone knows the downfalls if any of doing this. the entire things has an inductance of 20uH. I need some feedback. I'm probably going to try it regardless.

I seem to remember Popular Electronics did an article sometime ago about a square primary TC. I don't remember anything particular about increase/decrease in performance. This attached link claims it was at least derived from that article: http://www.uoguelph.ca/~antoon/circ/hv/sq-tesla/sq-tesla.html

The only true drawback i see is that it has lower coupling factor for some voltage stand-off. The best design from this perspective is a conical or maybe some other slope, but linear is pretty good.

I don't know, wrapping it on a big piece of pipe like that on secondary in the background of your pic is pretty easy too..

but its always nice to see a different way of doing things.

The pipe thing is easy except its a pain in the ass to space it evenly and harder to strip for taps. Not only that but I cant find the bag of little angle brackets I got to mount the pipes. cheesey

Well so much for this idea. Ive exhausted this. I can't get it to stop arcing over and when I lower the coupling a little it stops but the sparks suffer big time.

I also made another primary that is 7 Inches wide with a 3.5 secondary and roughly 9 turns. I use stripped 10 gauge wire and 8 wooden supports and even when this is perfectly tuned and just barely not flashing over I still get sparks maybe half of what I could with my old primary wound around a pipe.

It's like I finally had the thing right but now I'm starting all over again. Problem is the old primary cant be tapped very easily. cry
