280 Watt Flyback Driven Tesla Coil

Bauerb2, Sat Sept 01 2007, 05:07AM

I have seen many attempts out there to build a flyback driven tesla coil, and i've seen some good ones and some bad. But anyway, i would like to show you all my 2nd flyback driven coil.

Specs:
Half-bridge flyback driver from scopeboy.com http://www.scopeboy.com/tesla/flyback.html
-IRFP250s, 555 driven
-9-10 turn primary on flyback
Adjustable 0-12V RSG made from wood, bolts, plexiglass, and a motor.
4x 590pF primary tank 30kV

Tapped 8-9 turn primary.
1-1/8"dia 6" tall sec (not sure of the wire gauge, from iron core transformer)
2" dia sphere topload, no breakout

Control 'box' containing 12v drive voltage for FB driver, 30V 'high' voltage for FB primary xformer w/ FW rectifier, rotary spark gap speed control.

It doesnt seem like much, but this coil works great. Average streamer length with no ground target: ~5" Average arc length to a ground: ~7-8"

enough of that here are some pics. Enjoy...

and of course, a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUpGH7kSeFs (video's a bit old, new secondary (red) = longer arcs)

This type of coil can be made, honestly, with junk. i spent maybe $25 on this whole project (only bought caps, mosfets, circuit board.) This is a great project i've worked on, and i would like to know if i can improve this anymore. Any comments?

That is the best flyback powered TC I have ever seen. Good job!

I second that motion!
It must be the rotary spark gap that makes it
so good.
Well done.

I have to agree with everyone else!!! What a great coil. I haven't seen such a small coil with such power.

That rotary gap really makes the coil sing and the streamers are very bright.

Cheers

Beautiful little coil, and I must agree with Shawn, one of best-performing too.

This is a great project i've worked on, and i would like to know if i can improve this anymore.

Really don't know.. except you could maybe box the coil up? I think it really deserves..

Nice job, I'm also trying to make a flyback TC but the results are poor...
