Possibility of using a Tesla coil for glow discharge spectroscopy

How practical is it to use a Tesla coil to ionize a gas such as Mercury Oxide and measure the emission spectrum of Mercury in an industrial environment? Has anyone ever used a Tesla coil to do glow dischrage spectroscopy?

I'd guess quite impractical compared to a TV/Monitor flyback transformer,
since only a short arc is required.

Hi Robert,
A Tesla coil will strike an arc off/through almost anything, so it may be useful in situations where you can't strike an arc with any other type of power supply. My only worry would be that a Tesla coil might destroy itself by flashovers and tracking, if it was used in a dirty environment for a long time. These problems can be solved, but it may turn out less hassle to just use another type of power supply.
