Possible Toroid Source

All,

Below is a link to an auto exhaust supply shop that claims they sell "exhaust pipe donuts" for use by people fabricating custom exhaust for cars. Has anyone researched this as a possible toroid source?

The "donut" sizes they sell might be good for small, medium size coils. The material they list is 16GA steel, and stainless steel. I don't see why they couldn't do aluminum.

Nice find! I had to fix your link though.

Prices seem a little steep, though. John Freau charges ~$110 for a 4x13" toroid. Here you'd be paying that much for a 3x9". Smaller ones would make great corona rings, but you're probably better off bending copper tubing by hand for that.

Prices are a bit high. You can get much larger and less expensive toroids from John Freau or Information Unlimited as well. Plus with these toroids (exhaust supply), you still need to worry about mounting provisions.

I'm just going to throw Ross Engineering up here as well so you have another source for stuff. They have pretty much everything, although I dunno about prices. I think we were quoted $280 for the toroids I was looking for, common size.

I bought my 6x24" toroid (which I subsequently cut up...more on that later wink) from D.C. Cox (who orders them from O.W. Landergren) for something like $200. Don't know about Ross Engineering, but the John Freau and Information Unlimited ones have seams. The O.W.L. ones are seamless. Very nice. D.C. regularly makes bulk orders of toroids and resells them. Highly recommended!

Thank you for repairing the link. I am still trying to get the hang of this.

As for the donuts. Agreed, they are somewhat pricey, but they got me thinking of the exhaust shops here in town. I am curious if one of those shops would be able to make something similar for a few dollars. I have purchased small lengths of pipe from them for a few dollars before, and I doubt they would charge much to bend a piece for me. I can weld so, a little fab work doesn't concern me if i can get a cheap toroid out of it.

Also, I found another link, they have donuts for 5" diesel exhaust:

Mark Finnis, downuner, was my big idol when I sterted coiling some 10 years ago. He used exhaust toroids:

He also made his own transformer:

Which gave me the courage to do so too:

Mark is selling his stuff:

This triputo to him since he is out of the hobby now.
