Question about capacitors

Andrew L., Tue Jul 10 2007, 11:57AM

I'm about to buy some capacitors for a SSTC or DRSSTC and I'm not sure if the capacitors with the below specifications are fit for SSTC or DRSSTC use. What do you think?

High Voltage Polypropylene Film Capacitor
Type: PPS [CBB81]
Capacitance: 0.33uF
Rated voltage: 2000V
Capacitance tolerance: ±5%
Dimension: 25mm in width and 29mm in height

You need to find out if they are polypropylene film/foil with extended foil construction. This is the only type of capacitor that works reliably.

The capacitors look like these so I don't think that they are suitable for TC use.

A quick google for " pps cbb81" reveals that
they are foil/film polypropylene,
have a good dV/dt rating
and good dissipation factor.

So I'd guess they're good for TC use.

Where do you guys buy caps for TC, SSTC and DRSSTC use?
eBay?

Please guys, in a power supply for PC is some kind of that condensators -

that round blue and big "poppa" brown - plz tell me it is good enough and i finally found capacitors for 2K(ilo)V(olts), and plz. tell me if it is good capacity (and what hell is that capacity) to run some SGTC (verry little certainly)! You´ll make me very happy !!! THat big poppa is looking like those on the picture above

And this yellow square one - should it be applied for MMC ? it is rated to 280V(0,22uF), but dunno nothing more ...

For tesla coil use I believe many would recommend 1kv+ so the big daddy brown one most likely will not work, the yellow one won't work either I've tried it died (internal flash over at low voltages but high peak surges (looked cool) but don't work) the Blue 2Kv cap...I'm not sure.

the blue one definetly won't work because it's a ceramic cap. It will have very little capacitance and will flash over or pop and fling little ceramic bits.

too be perfectly honest with you, very few kinds of MMCs will take strong pulse discharges. The capacitors that survive this kind of abuse are double wound --

If the blue ones don't explode or flash over they melt (I've tried). It makes a mess.

CDE 942 capacitors are specially designed for massive current pulse discharge operation. I personally use the .68 uF 1600VDC rated CDE 942s... wow are they great!

I've found those yellow GE caps everyone hates are actually fine, at least for SGTC's, as long as you have multiple strings. Single strings pop like popcorn though. My NST coil has yet to blow two parallel strings.

Don't be so sure. I have about a hundred or so PP caps just like that. The ratings are a bit different, 1000V @ 0.22uF, and I used a string of 45 or so of those for my SGTC for several years for long runs with no problems.

I just learned how to embed the image in my post so if I did something wrong tell me and I'll fix it ASAP!
