Very cool, nice video!

wow! So you are using a small PT for your power source? Very very nice! nice sparks!

I'm not sure what the transformers are but around the 10kV each suggests a PT. I found these two in a transformer bin in a junkyard and got them for the scrap iron/copper weight. They had some much larger multi pancake transformers but sadly too large.
The coil is only firing at about 5 feet sparks in this photo because I gave my son a limit. Nevertheless it should do much better than the 8ft best so far. I haven't put it through JavaTC because that won't run on my computer.

very cool!!! was the cage you were standing in glowing red hot at the end?
Re: Tesla Envy - the video.
Tesladownunder, Fri Jun 29 2007, 10:33AM

The cage wasn't hot but the chainmail glove is earthed by 2 separate bolts. These were standard steel bolts but got hot enough with the RF losses to give me a slight thermal burn.
The welding type sparks are from some steel wool on the ends of all the spark contact points.

How many KVA are these trannies rated at? Curious.... who makes them?

Good grief. Nice stunt! Also, is it just my eyes, or when you were using the dalek cage, were there streamers coming off the cage itself? I watched the video a couple of times and I'm pretty sure I saw something like that.

I love the part where you pray to the tesla god and the new coil appears. When your in the cage it seems you look directly into the spark, how bright is it?

Not sure about either as no ID on them. They get warm after a bit of use. I would guess at 3-5kVA from the amount of iron but they are fully epoxy coated so won't get rid of heat well.

It's a lens flare giving parallel images in the opposite quadrant. Lots of faint streaky lines. There is a little sparking at the base. This is probably capacitative coupling to a sheet of aluminum used as a counter poise. The cage and the sheet are all earthed at the same point.

I did originally put my head to the ground as in Muslim prayer on a prayer mat. I wondered if anyone would be offended. Regardless, this shot came out the best out of a number of variations.
Looking at the sparks directly is not that bright surprisingly and I have a UV coating on my glasses that I have shown to be effective.

The main safety concern with the shots of sparks to a rod in my hand, is how far past the handheld rod could the spark jump. ie could it reach my unprotected arm. In the end I decided that the extra 2 feet from my arm to tip of rod was more than a 4 foot spark would reach. It did reach my glove ie 5 feet, if you look closely, so a justified concern.

I just bought myself a PT transformer, rated at 14.4kV 1750VA - westinghouse made. The unit weights almost 100 lbs, I think....I'll double check- I was told 3.5X KVA rating wouldn't be an issue. I have to take a few photos and send them your way :)

All for $250 CAN --- FOR a mint condition unit :)

but is that safe (even assumiing it wont hit you directly)?
There seems to be enough current for the arcs to make the metal glow, and you are conducting this through your body? or have I missed something here?
Re: Tesla Envy - the video.
Tesladownunder, Tue Jul 03 2007, 03:32AM

Yikes. Not conducting anything through my body. Electrically, I am only an appendage to an earth wire. (don't tell my friends)
Nothing travels through me that I can feel.
Except when using the tiny coil at the start of the video.

sorry? can you explain? That sounds contradictory.
Is the end of the stick connected to ground before your hand or something?

The one foot metal rod is held in my hand which is in a long chainmail glove. There are two separate earth wires which run from the glove to RF ground back at the Tesla coil. Yes I am touching the inside of the glove but the rest of me is not grounded and not in a significant current path.
