mini SG Tesla coil

I worked on a small SGTC and I finished it but the performance isn't that great. here are some pics its driven by a fly back transformer.

Never mind I got a 1/2" sparks to the air from the brake out point I just needed 2 more windings Ill post pics tonight when the lighting is better also what is the best way to take pictures so faint sparks?

Looks cool. What are its dimensions and the size of its tank cap? Depending on the size I bet you could get a lot more out of it. Here's one I made. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEuv6GAEnVE Its secondary is about an inch in dia. by around 8-9 inches tall. (not that great of an aspect ratio) It puts out streamers from a break out point that are around 5-6 inches and with more power sent to the flyback I can get upto about 8. But anyways, do you have any other specs on it?

yah it is 1" dia and 5" tall the tank cap is .0056 uf and I have 7 turns on primary.

Increase the number of primary turns... then see if the output changes. I bet it will be MUCH better :)

It probably just needs tuning. Also when the sparks are wimpy and long like that the spark gap is too wide. I found I had to use tight coupling and high BPS to get good streamers from my tiny coil. Link2

ok so I totaly screwed up and now I fixed it the coil will pout out 6" long streamers (as long as the coil) but you can only see 3" on the camera. here are some pics this coil is defently a keeper. cheesey

Looks great! Your spark length, at least spark lenght to coil size, is beating my mini coil. ;)

I got some questions for ya too. :)

What driver do you have running the flyback? If it's ZVS what voltage/amperage(if you have a way of metering it) are you putting into the flyback? Also are you running a DC flyback or an AC one? Also what guage wire are you using?

BTW: For taking pictures you can try first making sure that the camera's flash is off, the shutter rate (ISO) is set low, and that your room lighting is also low. Usually camera's have a manual mode that allows you to change these options.

Keep up the good work! smile

ok so I am using a ZVS PSU and I am running it at 47V at 6A and I have 7 turns on each leg so 14 total. The flyback is a DC flyback but I thought it was an AC one because it didnt have a filter cap so only one I hoocked it up I realized how good this one was. I will build a new deiver with this center taped because I have 4 of them and I can buy 40 of them for $4 each at the stor I go to. the wite I was using was 16AWG and everything was getting hot espeacially the IGBTs but when I added a fan I cooled everything down verry well. Last thing is tha this is verry cool it defently is a huge improvement and I added 3 more turns and the spark length increased even more.

ok so now I have some even better pics it still doesn't do justice.

I just love this pic cheesey

Awesome coil, looks very well put together. What is your primary made of? It almost looks like thick solder.

and lol, typing skills and tesla skills must be in two different parts of the brain. wink

the primary is actaully made of .2" silver solder so you are right but I ran out so I added 2 turns of regular wire
more pics of ground arcs

Great pictures! It's looking better than my tiny SGTC too.

ok so while I have been playing around so much and trying to increase spark length, I destroyed everything I finally reached 6" with no brake out point and a 9" arc to ground =) but I destroyed my fly back and my tank caps. I replaced the diodes in the fly back with 20 50N60 ultra fast rectifiers and built a nice 50A 13000V rectifier but it gets really hot while operating the blown caps but it stays cool while drawing 4" arcs from the fly back. I am going to buy 10 of these fly backs because there performance was great for only $4.
