Stripping paint off transformer cans...

...what do people recommend? I just picked up some big old PT's from the utility today. They're actually oil-filled, which is interesting. Anyway, the cans are in good shape w/o any rust, but the paint is not especially handsome, and is peeling in a few spots (e.g., around the bushings). I'd like to strip it off and repaint with pastels wink I've used that pink stripping "goop" stuff before, but always found myself chiseling leftovers off afterwards. What a mess!

Ideas?

A buddy is actually bringing these out to me from the salvage yard on Thursday or I'd post a pic now so you'd see what I'm up against. I'll do so then.

Cheers!
Aaron

It may be a powder finish, but I'll have to double-check. If so, then even if I could haul 'em to a sandblasting place, they'd charge me big $$ to blast for that long. Those guys HATE powder. I took a rusty lid ring from a pole pig to be sand-blasted once and it took the guy 30 minutes blasting it point blank. Nuts!!
