pre-accelerator

i was wondering if it would make a noticeable difference if i accelerated the projectile (pneumaticly or with a spring) before it went through two coils as opposed to us the first coil to start it off

The energy that you transfer to the projectile in any pre-stage will not go disappear so the final velocity will be higher. If it makes sense depends entirely on why are making a coil gun.

A gun based on compressed gas will be far cheaper and more powerful than a coil gun so it would be a strange combination. If it is for fun, learning or to achieve a very accurate velocity then it might make sense.

IIRC, someone in Japan tried this. Along with Bjørn, I'm not sure why there'd be a practical reason to combine compressed gas with EM.

Since (I'm assuming) the bulk of your energy will be in the capacitors, anyway, there won't be any major efficiency advantage over a multistage design.

The best preaccelerator is a coilgun itself or a solenoid + spring combination. I'm using this configuration for my semiautomatic magnetic submachine pistol where a solenoid is used to kick the projectiles out of the magazine into the coil barrel for further acceleration
