Can anyone identify this WWII clasp?

Bjørn, Fri Feb 10 2006, 12:37AM

I have looked everywhere I could think of without finding a match. It is slightly reminiscent of the clasp of an Iron Cross, but it is not the same. I have a slight feeling it might be something rewarded to civilians, possibly by NSDAP.

Even the smallest clue will be helpful since I have run out of leads.

Do you have a better scan ?
It looks like a Pen / Pocket-Lighter and a small airplane to me (or a cross with two T's )

Do we know a nationality? I agree that it appears to be a small airplane medallion of some sort. Possibly a Civil Air Patrol decoration? A larger picture of the uniform might help as well. The shape all the way on the right, where it attaches to the lapel looks like a number or letter maybe.

There is no more definition to get of the clasp, the picture is taken with a portrait lens with a very shallow depth of focus. I suspect he is German but I have no proof so in theory he could be of any nationality.

There is some writing on the picture that suggest that he is not Norwegian but has spent some time in Norway during or right after WWII.

IIRC the pre-srunk wool felt coats had brass buttons for the allied forces. Perhaps, it may be a clue.

He has long hair for a soldier.

Pic with no crop?

It is the whole picture. It has 1947 written on it so it must have been taken some time before that.

I agree with Carbon Rod here. It looks an awful lot like a pen slipped into the button hole with some sort of little trinket on the pen clip for decoration. Almost impossible to say for sure though, without knowing if he's actually in uniform or not.

Isn't that sort of a strange place to stick a pen? Particularly when you are having your portrait taken professionally? It definately looks like a lapel pin of some sort to me. Doesn't seem to resemble very closely any sort of military badge, however, for Germany. Possibly from another country, of course. It does look very much like a standard-issue NSDAP badge, though. There are some a bit further down on this page (the ones with the birds and the swastika below). Blurred, they could resemble airplane shapes, like in the photo. You can clearly see the tail of the "airplane" is flared outwards, and could possibly be round.

I am quite sure it is not a relative, but I don't know who it is. I think it is someone my grandfather knew.
