Plasmasonic Audio Modulated Tesla Coil (Video)

HV Enthusiast, Sat Apr 28 2007, 12:35AM

Here is a video of my original Plasmasonic audio modulated system with a cool looking electrode.
The music is "Deliverance" by Yanni.

Enjoy!

Wow EVR That has to be 1 if not the best sounding Audio modulated TC I've seen

Very nice job EVR. Definatly the best audio modulated coil i have seen. On your youtube post you say it is stero, how would that work though if there is only one arc/coil?

Thanks. The quality is pretty good, although because this design switches at 350kHz, corona hiss is still present. But it is a trade-off between volume and quality. This coil can put out up to 2kW and really crank out some volume, including low bass, especially with the large surface area electrodes. Higher frequency designs (3MHz+) are virtually silent and produce really clean sound, but lack the volume since they cannot produce (at least not easily) the power that a lower frequency unit can produce.

Thanks. Yes, the Plasmasonic system is stereo, however, i'm only showing a single unit here. The whole system utilizes two identical coils for stereo operation, and the effect is absolutely stunning. The imaging is incredible with stereo operation and sounds pop from seemingly nowhere, especially when using small point-source like electrodes.

This video shows the standard configuration of the Plasmasonic electrode.

That is really amazing, must seem really cool when the sound seems to come from nowhere. It's so cool how the corona discharge changes with the sound; for the high points of the sound it puts out a larger discharge, really gives it a dramtic look. Does changing the electrode size or shape affect it's sound in any way? What does the audio modulate? Is it frequence or input power, or maybe both?
Awesome job, keep up the great work! smile

As a matter of principle and personal preference, I prefer more moderate volumes and crisp, perfect operation. That's why I've been working on these 9MHz and 13.56MHz coils. I do like the great amount of.. 'excursion' (hehe) you're able to get from your larger system. At 350kHz, you could be running the coil itself from a TL494?

Don't stop at stereo. Try quadraphonic! You'll be pleasantly surprised, as I was with my four-way 4MHz system. (I really had to settle on 4MHz, because that was the fastest I could push IRFP450s with the gatedrivers I had on hand.)

The VU meter is a nice touch.

Thanks.

Yeah, i've done extensive work with 10MHz coils about 3 years ago for the next generation Plasmasonic and they worked great (they used IXYS RF MOSFETs) - sounds was definitely pristine, but just didn't have the volume i was looking for (especially since i do lots of demonstrations for large groups of people) and also since they were low power, they suffered greatly from low-end response. The plasmasonics, with the circular electrode, can really push the lows quite well.

I was looking at your Plasmasonic papers on your site some time back and was really impressed with your work, so I'm glad that you posted this vid so that I can just tell you how great I think it is. Well don Dan.
Never thought Yanni could sound so good. wink

Thanks for the comments!

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of Yanni either, but this one piece sounds pretty good on this thing!

Hi Dan,
Yanni or not, your Plasmasonic was my inspiration for dabbling in audio tesla coils...

Cheers!

Thanks!

And if you like James Bond . . .

Complete with my patented "Tornado" Electrode! :)

Although, the tuning was really off on this so there was lots of distortion in the sound output, not to mention the crappy MP3 file i used for the audio.

"Patented"? ...Either way it's still a very nice setup with outstanding audio output.

Not really, that was a joke.
