my pole pig powered coil
jameselectric, Thu Apr 19 2007, 09:35AMWell in about a month I will be obtaining a pole pig rated at 10 kva. my last 2 coils were a nst for my first coil and a 2 mot dc rectified for my second setup. a rough plan includes a 6x24 secondary. how will this compare to my other coils. cap size? inductive ballasting. don't worry I am not a 15 year old with a pig i am a 27 year old industrial maintenance man with a college degree.

If you even have to ask what cap size and ballast you need, you ought to do some more general research before you take the Pole Pig Pepsi Challenge. Heck, if you have a college degree in some EE related subject, you should be able to work out what cap size, ballast and spark gap break rate you need with a pocket calculator in about 5 minutes. In fact, you already did that before you bought a pig, right?
Why don't you go and search the Pupman archives and see what other coilers did with pole pigs in the past. I will not provide a link to the Pupman archives, since if you're at all serious about Tesla coiling, you know where they are already.
For ballast, people tend to use things like a 225 amp Lincoln arc welder with the welding leads shorted.
For tank capacitors, they tend to use the biggest meanest looking capacitor they can get a hold of, rated at least 20-30kV and up to several hundred joules of bang energy. The resulting spark lengths are in the teens of feet (the last pig powered coil I saw produced 14ft, drawing around 30A @ 240v, or maybe a lot more!) so you'll probably need a taller secondary than 24".
PS. You can of course use a wussier ballast and a smaller tank capacitor, to drive a smaller coil from a pig. It's almost impossible to screw up with a resistive ballast like a space heater, water heater or a couple of toaster ovens.

Please take ever precaution, keep one hand in your back pocket and have disconnected power cord in the other hand when working on a pig. I have a pig, and have worked with HV a long time but they (piggy) still scare the hell out of me!

heh, never mind i aquired 10 microwaves today. there's no way im giving up my source (lol) guess i'll just work on a 4 mot setup.
