resistors for filter

haulinick, Sat Apr 14 2007, 10:09AM

I am having a bit of trouble finding information on homemade hv accurate resistors. I need two 1Kohm resistors for a filter for my nst. Can I use a bunch of small 1k resistors in parrellel to up the voltage handling? if so, what would the equation be, just adding the voltage of each resistor?

Like I said, I hav searched and found nothing frown

Digikey sells many good ones:

FVT100-1.0K-ND
L100J1K0-ND
L100J1k0E- ND

They are all in stock and the first on is the cheapest.

Cheers,

You need to put the resistors in series since the voltage accross each resistor is what counts. If you put them in parallel the voltage accross each resistor will be the same (but not the current).

If you put 10 one hundred Ohm resistors in series you will get 1 kOhm and 10 times the voltage rating (within certain limits).

Look up Kirchoff's laws and Ohm's law.

thanks. That is what i was looking for.

Those resistors at digikey are wirewound. I thought I read somewhere that those can cause alot of problems if they a begin to arc even a little bit?

Terry Fritz is the guy who designed the Terry Filter in the first place, so I think whatever resistor he recommends will work just fine, wirewound or not.

I have a pair of L100J1K0E Ohmite's as listed above.

You'll be happy with them.

My first version for my terry filter used a 4x5" perf board filled with various 1/2 w resistors and it was flaky as it could get. Deff don't go that route.

edit:

Double Take... hey... Terry Fritz is here...cool...mind taking a glance at my filter, tell me if it look right?

Thanks :)

Looks fine to me.

Those big wire wound power resistors are indestructible unless you drop them on concrete smile
